Want to use a mouse and keyboard on PS4?

Not a lot of people know this, but the PS4 does support both of these things, and not only is it possible to play PC-style on the console, but it’s also actually advantageous in some cases.

That’s right – you can replace your PS4 controller with a keyboard and mouse!

Let’s look at our top recommendations for the best PS4 keyboard and mouse combos to help guide your buying process.

Best PS4 Keyboard and Mouse

While you can use any compatible PC keyboard and mouse with your PS4, there are some amazing gaming versions out there worth checking. Whether they offer better compatibility or gamer-friendly features, here are our top picks:

HORI Tac Pro

  • Wireless: No
  • Touchpad: No
  • Keyboard Type: Half

HORI is known for its specialized and, more importantly, officially recognized PS4 controllers. The Tac Pro is its version of a keyboard and mouse setup for the PS4 geared explicitly towards FPS games.

The biggest benefit of the HORI is that it’s an official product, meaning compatibility is guaranteed with your PS4. You don’t need to spend on third party adapters as it works natively with all PS4 games.

That’s because, in many ways, the Tac Pro isn’t really a keyboard but a controller configured to act like one. The buttons represent all the shape buttons and left analog stick on the Dualshock 4. The mouse, meanwhile, replaces the right analog stick for aiming and the shoulder button for firing.

The result is a keyboard that replicates PC-style FPS gaming on the PS4. The buttons on the keyboard themselves are very tactile and easy to press. The unusual shape is actually ergonomic and includes a palm rest. It’s overall quite comfortable, although it will take some getting used to.

If you’re not too happy with the default settings, you can remap the keys using the Hori Device Manager app for both Android and iOS. It allows you to save up to 8 presets, which can also include sensitivity settings. So you can switch it up depending on the game you’re playing.

As for the mouse, it features 3,200 dpi for pinpoint accuracy. It’s decent, at best. The good news is that you can switch this out for any USB mouse you prefer. This is great if you have the best ps4 mouse that you’re already comfortable using, or want an elite, high-performance mouse.

Overall, the Hori Tac Pro is an easy way to bring the PC experience and accuracy to your FPS games. While not the best of the bunch, it’s both convenient and inexpensive, as you don’t need to mess around with a converter.

  • Fully customizable buttons and settings with up to 8 profiles
  • Guaranteed to work flawlessly with the PS4
  • Ergonomic and comfortable design

  • Mouse quality is mediocre

Our Rating: 4.5 / 5.0

If you’d like to buy this gaming keypad and mouse, you can do that from Amazon or the official HORI website.

  • Wireless: No
  • Touchpad: No
  • Keyboard Type: Mechanical
  • Keyboard Configuration: Full

The IFYOO KMAX1 Pro is a half-keyboard and mouse combo with a built-in adapter. This gives you the advantage of using it natively with the PS4 and other consoles.

The KMAX1 Pro is surprisingly straightforward to use. It’s just a matter of plugging the keyboard to the PS4 console, then connecting the Dualshock 4 controller to it. You can then use it, just like that! You can press the F3/F4 keys to adjust mouse sensitivity.

Of course, it has its limitations. For one, you can’t change the key mappings, so you’ll be stuck with whatever configuration the manufacturer has deemed as the default. It certainly adds to the learning curve, but it’s the price you pay for the convenience and straightforward installation of the KMAX1 Pro.

You also lose some functionality with your Dualshock 4. You can’t charge it, nor can you use a headset with the headphone jack (you’ll need to connect it via Bluetooth instead).

But for the most part, this keyboard and mouse setup works like a charm. The keys themselves have an excellent tactile feel and feedback when you press them. The same can’t be said about the mouse, as it feels cheap. It does, however, offer a high 7,200 dpi sensitivity, so that’s nice.

Overall, the IFYOO KMAX1 Pro is a pretty affordable and straightforward way to play PC-style on a PS4, without needing to buy an adapter.

  • Can be used with all PS4 games without the need for an adapter
  • The mechanical keyboard feels and works great
  • Good design on the keyboard

  • You won’t be able to change key mappings
  • Can’t charge the Dualshock 4 controller while connected

Our Rating: 4.9 / 5.0

If you’re interested in the IFYOO KMAX1 Pro, you can buy it from Amazon.

Ziyou Lang Gaming Keyboard and Mouse

  • Wireless: No
  • Cable Length: 1.5m
  • Touchpad: No
  • Keyboard Type: Membrane Keys
  • Keyboard Configuration: Half

The Ziyou Lang is an inexpensive way to try out keyboard and mouse gaming on your PS4. While it is designed for use with the game PUBG (as evident with the labeled keys), this works exceptionally well with the Playstation console as well.

The keyboard is as top-notch as other more expensive models out there. The keys are very responsive and have a satisfying ‘click’ with each press. The rests are comfortable for your wrists as well, so we don’t really mind that you can’t detach them.

The layout is excellent as well, and everything is within reach, even for those with smaller hands. It is, however, not identical to the layout of a traditional keyboard. So if you’re used to that like most people, there is a small learning curve you need to overcome.

The mouse is surprisingly high quality and precise despite the budget price of this unit. The 3,200-dpi sensitivity means you have a high degree of accuracy when aiming with this mouse. There are also 4 adjustment levels if you prefer something less sensitive. The anti-skid texture also protects from wear and moisture from sweaty hands during prolonged sessions.

The best feature, however, is the price. This keyboard and mouse is a fraction of what other models cost, even if you factor in the cost of the adaptor (yes, unfortunately, this doesn’t work natively with the PS4)

Overall, the Ziyou Lang Mouse and Keyboard is a great way to get into PC-style gaming on your PS4 for less. Besides, in our opinion, this is also arguably the best ps4 keyboard.

  • Comfortable membrane keys
  • High sensitivity mouse
  • Colorful backlighting
  • Budget price

  • Needs an adaptor to work with the PS4

Our Rating: 4.5 / 5.0

Currently, you can only buy this gaming keypad and mouse from stores like Amazon.

Razer Huntsman

  • Wireless: No
  • Touchpad: No
  • Keyboard Type: Opto-Mechanical Switch Keys
  • Keyboard Configuration: Full

The Razer Huntsman is one of the best gaming keyboards available today. This is because it’s one of the fastest around, giving you lightning-fast response times when playing.

The Huntsman’s innovation is its optomechanical switch, which combines optical technology with traditional mechanical actuators. What this means is that you can press buttons at lightning speeds, and your in-game actions will be just as fast.

For gamers who need a speed boost when mashing buttons repeatedly, the Huntsman is a boon. This also extends into you’re typing as well, although it matters much less, of course.

The keys themselves are also much more comfortable than a lot of what we use. You don’t need to exert as much pressure to press the buttons. They’re also very stable and don’t wobble around. They are loud, though, so much so that these make very poor office keyboards. But for gaming, it’s mostly a non-issue.

The backlighting is also a common feature of gaming keyboards, and we like how it’s presented in the Huntsman. This is one of the brightest keyboards we’ve used, even rivaling Razer’s other keyboard offerings. It’s great for playing in dark rooms.

The body of the keyboard has a solid build made with metal. We also like the wrist rest, which is comfortable despite the amount of real estate it’s occupying.

Overall, the Razer Huntsman is one of the best elite gaming keyboards you can buy. It can actually give you lightning-fast performance gains, but only if you use a PS4 adaptor with it.

  • Allows lightning-fast key presses
  • Comfortable keys that are effortless to press
  • Extra bright backlighting
  • Solid construction

  • Loud
  • Needs an adaptor to fully utilize its potential

Our Rating: 4.7 / 5.0

If you’re a fan of the Razer Huntsman gaming keyboard, you can buy it from Amazon, the official Razer website, and Best Buy.

Logitech K400

  • Wireless: Yes
  • Touchpad: Yes
  • Range: 10 meters
  • Keyboard Configuration: Full

The Logitech K400 is a fantastic option if you want a keyboard purely for typing purposes on your PS4. It’s great for doing non-gaming tasks like surfing the Web or chatting from the comfort of your couch.

The K400 has everything you need to easily navigate around in Netflix or a web browser, all within its reasonably compact and lightweight frame. It has an excellent 10-meter wireless range, so you use it anywhere in the room.

The keys are responsive and comfortable to type in. It also has a touchpad, so there’s no need to connect a mouse. It’s reasonably sensitive and feels comfortable to the touch.

A lot of the good reviews with the Logitech K400 point to how easy it is to set up and use, and that’s all true. It really is plug and play, without the need to install drivers.

Apart from this, there’s nothing really stellar about the Logitech K400. It works exceptionally well, and since it’s not for gaming, you don’t need a PS4 adaptor to fully realize its potential.

Nevertheless, if you use your PS4 for browsing the Web or streaming videos, then the Logitech K400 is a great keyboard companion.

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Keys are easy to press
  • Integrated touchpad
  • Affordable price

  • Not great for gaming, just typing on console

Our Rating: 4.3 / 5.0

If you’re a fan of the Logitech K400, you can buy this product from Amazon, the official Logitech website, and Best Buy.

Redragon K561

  • Wireless: No
  • Touchpad: No
  • Keyboard Type: Mechanical
  • Keyboard Configuration: Full

The Redragon K561 is a rugged gaming keyboard that’s built to withstand some punishment. One of its core benefits is its IP67 rating, giving it decent resistance from spills and scratches. This lengthens the lifespan of this keyboard considerably.

This is a gorgeous mechanical keyboard with colorful, customizable backlighting that gives it that oomph factor. The build of the K561 uses both aircraft-grade aluminum and durable ABS plastic. Combined, they both add to the visual appeal and functional durability of this keyboard.

The keys are also shaped to fit the natural contour of your fingers for effortless pressing. They resound with a satisfying click and tactile feedback.

The keys of the K561 uses a unique mechanical switch that gives it a lightning-quick response when pressed. It also helps prevent ghosting and ensures every keypress is accounted for. Couple that with the wired configuration, and you get a very responsive keyboard.

The features of the K561 point to a keyboard that’s built for fast typing speeds. This isn’t limited to games, but to typing-heavy tasks as well. They are rated to withstand 50 million presses.

Overall, the Redragon K561 is a fantastic gaming keyboard that’s both fun and practical to use. This durable keyboard is also a steal with its relatively affordable pricing.

  • Customizable RGB lighting
  • Spill and scratch proof
  • Overall durable build and gorgeous visual design
  • Reasonable pricing

  • Keys are loud

Our Rating: 4.9 / 5.0

If you want to make the Redragon K561 part of your gaming setup, you can do that by buying it from Amazon and the official Redragon website.

Best PS4 Keyboard and Mouse Adapters

One limitation of using mouse and keyboard input with the PS4 is that not a lot of games support it natively. If you want to play PC-style on every PS4 game, though, there is a workaround. You can use an adapter.

Adapters convert the keyboard and mouse input and convert them into controller signals that the PS4 can understand.

The main thing you need to look out for when using an adapter is that it should be low latency (delay). It should also support key remapping or giving you the freedom to assign every PS4 button to your keyboard keys.

Here are some top picks when it comes to the best ps4 keyboard and mouse adapters.

ProductProsOur Rating
XIM APEX• Excellent latency and performance
• Offers plenty of key customization
ConsoleTuner Titan Two• Gives unparalleled levels of customization
• Cross-platform

The XIM APEX is the gold standard when it comes to PS4 keyboard and mouse adapters. It has almost unmatched performance, with minimal lag and accurate translation from mouse/keyboard to controller inputs.

The XIM APEX is, for the most part, easy to install, but it isn’t exactly plug and play. After connecting your mouse and keyboard to the XIM APEX system, you need to configure settings for each game using the smartphone app. This includes mapping keys on the keyboard, and adjusting sensitivity for the mouse.

And it just works. The latency is low to none, and you have a lot of freedom in how you map commands to your keyboard. For example, you can bind two PS4 buttons into one key, so you can activate multi-press skills with on stroke. This wealth of freedom is a boon to improve your game, especially in FPS titles.

It’s also great that XIM APEX receives widespread support from both developers and the gaming community. This means it will most likely work with your favorite game. The only downside is that there might be some delay when supporting newer releases.

If you’re having trouble with using your keyboard/mouse set up, it almost always has something to do with your settings. This can easily be adjusted with the XIM smartphone app.

With that being said, the XIM APEX is one of the most expensive keyboard/mouse adapters in the market. It’s especially steep for its intended purpose.

Nevertheless, if you want a high-performance device for using any keyboard/mouse combo on the PS4, this is one of the best you can get. It gives an overall exceptional emulation experience.

  • Excellent latency and performance
  • Offers plenty of key customization
  • Supports a wide variety of games

  • Expensive
  • Support can take longer for newer games

Our Rating: 4.7 / 5.0

If you want to make use of the XIM APEX, you can get it from Amazon and the official XIM Tech website.

ConsoleTuner Titan Two

The ConsoleTuner Titan Two is more than just a keyboard and mouse adapter for your PS4. It’s a full-powered gaming device that combines multiple functionalities into one. With it, you can customize almost everything with your gaming. You can implement rapid-fire, scripts, and almost any other hack imaginable.

Of course, we’ll focus on the mouse and keyboard adapter feature, to which the Titan Two does an excellent job. In fact, because it offers you plenty of customization powers, you have a lot of freedom in how you map keys and control aspects of the experience.

Since it’s cross-platform, the possibilities are also endless. You can use a Dualshock 4 controller with your PC just as quickly as you can use a keyboard with your PS4.

The only issue of all that power is that it can get complex if you want it to. Fortunately, there’s a wealth of information out there to help you, even the device itself doesn’t get that much support. And if you’re willing to put in the time, you can unlock a lot of cool things.

Overall, the ConsoleTuner Titan Two is for the adventurous gamer who wants to tinker around. It’s not as straightforward to use, nor has it the level of support of others like the XIM APEX. But for the gamer who can make it work, it can open up a lot of cool possibilities.

  • Gives unparalleled levels of customization
  • Cross-platform
  • High data transfer rate

  • Not as straightforward to use

Our Rating: 4.4 / 5.0

If the ConsoleTuner Titan Two is what you’ve been looking for, you can buy it from Amazon and the Console Tuner website.

Why Get a Keyboard and Mouse for your PS4?

It might seem odd to use a keyboard and mouse set up for your PS4. After all, the Dualshock 4 is supposed to be the perfect controller to play every title in the PS4’s roster, right?

While that is true, there are some games and tasks where a PC-style keyboard and mouse set up is a much better fit. Here are some of those things:

Improve your first-person shooter (FPS) game

While perfected over the years, there are still some things the Dualshock 4 controller cannot do. The PS4 controller is designed for smoothly moving around a 3D space or 2D space (as is the case with fighting games)

But when it comes to aiming (the critical mechanic in first-person shooters), however, using the analog stick is much harder. If you want pinpoint accuracy, the mouse is still the way to go. It offers much better control, precision, and speed when aiming, something that’s very hard to replicate in a controller.

Hence, why FPS is still best played on a PC. If you’ve tried switching to the PS4’s analog stick from a mouse while playing these games (like I did), you’ll know what I mean. The struggle is definitely real.

It’s easier to input text using a keyboard.

A lot of games require you to input text, and any PS4 player will instantly know how cumbersome this is. Highlighting letters on a virtual keyboard one-by-one is a much, much slower process than just typing it using a physical keyboard.

This is especially beneficial if you use any game’s chat feature extensively. In the heat of the game, being able to input a message as quickly as possible is always a plus!

By the way, being able to input text fast goes beyond games. If your PS4 is your home’s entertainment hub, then you will most likely use it to stream movies via Netflix or some other platform. A keyboard and mouse can help you search movie titles much faster.

It makes surfing the Web on the PS4 easier.

If you haven’t realized yet, your PS4 actually comes with its own web browser. You can use it to surf the Web, watch videos, check your mail – basically, anything you can do on a computer.

I think the big reason most people don’t know or use the web browser is that it’s incredibly tedious to do it using the Dualshock 4 controller. Difficulty in typing in the URL is one thing. But selecting links and navigating the page is an entirely new level of frustration.

A keyboard and mouse tandem will make web browsing on your PS4 a breeze. So much that you’ll forget that you’re actually doing it on a console.

Things You Need To Know First

Before you go out and buy a keyboard and mouse (or use your existing one!) for your PS4, there are a few things you need to be aware of.

Most keyboard and mice are compatible with the PS4

There’s a high probability that your computer’s mouse and keyboard are compatible with your PS4. To know, simply plug it into the console’s USB slot. A notification will pop up, telling you the connection was successful. Unfortunately, if it doesn’t, then your devices aren’t compatible, and there’s little you can do about it.

Both wired and wireless keyboard/mouse are supported by the PS4. For wireless, you can simply plug in the USB Bluetooth dongle into the USB port. However, shared USB dongles for both keyboard and mouse might create a problem. Usually, only one of the devices will be recognized.

Of course, your best bet is to buy a mouse and keyboard made specifically for gaming. Check out our recommendations above to get you started.

Not all games are compatible with a keyboard and mouse.

As cool as the feature is, unfortunately, there are only a handful of games that support the direct use of a keyboard and mouse.

The simple reason is that PS4 games are programmed with the PS4 controller in mind. Developers will have to go out of their way to add keyboard/mouse functionality in their game. Unless it’s critical to the gameplay, the effort just isn’t worth it.

There is, however, a workaround. You can use a third party adaptor like Xim4 and IOGEAR. These devices convert the keyboard and mouse input into controller signals. Essentially, you’re tricking the PS4 into thinking that you’re using a Dualshock 4 controller.

Doing this will allow you to play any PS4 game, keyboard, and mouse style.

Keyboard and mouse setups are frowned upon in some competitive games.

Because the keyboard and mouse are much more precise, it can give you a massive advantage over other players using the controller. Unfortunately, most devs and gamers see this as bordering on cheating.

Hence, some games ban using a keyboard and mouse entirely when playing multiplayer. If your goal is to rise through the ranks online in your favorite FPS game, check first if it’s legal to use keyboard and mouse before buying.

Of course, if you’re going to play your game entirely offline, then this is fine.

What to Look For

While you can use any keyboard or mouse for the PS4, certain features separate the gaming variety from the pack. If you want that particular edge, you’d want to look into:

Full vs. Partial Keyboards

You’ll see a lot of PS4 gaming keyboards in the markets that only feature the left half of a traditional, full keyboard. These are mostly designed for first person shooter games, where most commands for moving, reloading, etc. are mapped to the keys on the left portion of the keyboard.

If you’re buying a keyboard/mouse specifically for FPS games, then this is a good option. It’s lighter and much more compact, allowing you to place it much more flexibly.

Of course, the drawback is that you can’t use it for its original, intended use – typing characters.

Many gaming keyboards feature a touchpad, allowing you to do mouse movements without the need for an actual mouse. This is great for portability. You don’t need a flat surface to operate a mouse, so you can have full keyboard and mouse functionality, even while sitting on your couch or on the bed.

Touchpads, of course, are mostly used for non-gaming tasks like browsing the Web. Unless you’re that skilled with a touchpad!

Mechanical vs. Membrane Keyboards

The keys of the keyboard can be constructed in two distinct ways.

The traditional way is the mechanical keys, which rest on mechanical switches to ‘activate’ them. They require longer presses and have the satisfying ‘click’, which some people prefer for the feedback it gives. The issue, however, is that they tend to be noisy.

Membrane keyboards, on the other hand, are more modern versions. They have a membrane that is activated by receiving pressure from your fingers when you press on the keys. They don’t require long presses, and many prefer them because you can type faster with them.

What you pick will come down to preference and what you’re used to. Older players will be more familiar with mechanical keyboards.

Anti-Ghosting Features

Almost all gaming keyboards will have an anti-ghosting feature; in fact, it’s a feature that is often only useful when playing. If you’re using a keyboard with your PS4, this is essential.

But what does anti-ghosting actually mean?

Ghosting is a limitation of some keyboards that prevents you from pressing multiple keys at once. When you do this, some vital signals will become lost in the ‘confusion’. As an example, if you try typing a sentence with the two shift keys pressed, you’ll often lose the first few characters of that sentence.

As you can imagine, this becomes a big problem in games that often require multiple, simultaneous key presses. Anti-ghosting simply prevents this phenomenon from happening.

Wired vs. Wireless

The debate whether to use wired or wireless matters much more for a console player who plays in a TV and couch setup. They won’t necessarily have a table nearby on which to operate a mouse. A wireless mouse and keyboard can be placed much more flexibly without having to deal with wires and clutter.

However, the performance of a wired mouse and keyboard will be far superior compared to wireless versions. That’s because there won’t be any latency (delay) to deal with, so it’s instantly responsive. You also don’t need to worry about battery life.

In the end, go for a wired mouse, unless it’s impossible with your set up. The added hassle of decluttering wires is worth the performance gains.

Mouse Sensitivity

The sensitivity of the mouse is measured using DPI, or dots per inch. If you have a high DPI, then the pointer will travel on-screen that much further from the tiniest of movement.

There is a common misconception that a high DPI is always better when it comes to a gaming mouse. That’s why you’ll often see manufacturers advertise the DPI heavily.

But DPI really comes down to preference. Sure, a sensitive mouse will allow you to aim your shots with greater precision. However, an overly sensitive mouse will ironically make aiming harder, because the crosshair can jump around the screen excessively.

In the end, it all boils down to which one you’re used to.

There are also certain situations where a high DPI is desired, and others where it’s not. For example, if you’re zoomed in using a sniper rifle in an FPS game, a sensitive mouse will allow you to aim with finer accuracy. However, it might feel excessive when you’re using a standard, zoomed-out gun.

Hence, some gaming mouse will have a switch that allows you to change DPI settings on the fly.
