Venturing through the treacherous landscapes of Baldur’s Gate 3 demands more than just a sharp blade and a courageous heart.

In this world of peril and power struggles, every move you make in battle can be the difference between victory and defeat.

As you delve into the realm of strategic combat, these combat tips and tricks will guide you toward having a deadly party in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Always Use Your Bonus Actions

Remember that each party member receives both an Action and a Bonus Action on their turn. In the heat of battle, every action counts.

To optimize your potential, make sure to utilize all available actions before concluding your turn.

Some characters even have multiple Actions due to Class perks or modifiers.

Don’t underestimate the power of movement as a strategic tool – evading impending attacks can be as crucial as dealing damage.

Some spells, such as Healing Word and Misty Step, can be cast as a bonus action. If you don’t have a spellcaster, the Jump and Shove maneuvers let you control the battlefield by changing your or the enemy’s position.

Just remember, check what you can do with your bonus action before ending a character’s turn.

Select Your Spells Carefully

When choosing spells, consider their casting time and potential impact. On top of spells that take an action to be cast, some can be used with a bonus action and others with a reaction.

This careful selection can give you a tactical advantage in various combat situations.

For instance, the spell Shield takes a reaction and can be the difference between life and death in many situations. Misty Step uses a bonus action and allows you to teleport and move for optimal positioning.

Reacting swiftly with a spell that counters an enemy’s action can turn the tide of battle in your favor.

Finding all BG 3 companions will provide enough spell variety to optimize your party.

Use the Environment

The battlefield is more than just a backdrop – it’s a tool at your disposal. Take a moment to assess your surroundings before engaging enemies.

Objects like rocks, chandeliers, and suspended items can be manipulated to significantly damage foes. Enhance your attacks by dipping your weapons in nearby elements like Fire.

There are even caves with stalactites that you can hit to make them fall on an enemy.

Be creative and use the environment to your advantage.

Shove and Push Enemies

The Shove Bonus Action is an underrated maneuver that can prove immensely effective.

Especially against enemies positioned at higher elevations, a well-timed shove can send them plummeting to a potentially lethal outcome.

Strengthen your shoving capabilities by investing in higher Strength and Athletics attributes.

You can also push enemies much larger than you with the Thunderwave spell.

This powerful trick allows you to finish off bosses with a single hit.

Mind Enemy Saving Throws

Casting spells or performing special attacks doesn’t always guarantee success. Enemies have a chance to resist effects through Saving Throws.

Stay vigilant and be aware of enemy Saving Throws to ensure your tactics hit the mark.

This understanding prevents perceived failures and helps you tailor your approach to each opponent’s weaknesses.

Have a Melee Weapon in Hand

You might have characters that are better at a distance, and it’s okay.

However, swap to a melee weapon before ending your turn if you want to take advantage of the game’s mechanics.

Opportunity Attacks often result in free damage, so you need to take advantage of them.

Once a character leaves an enemy’s threatening range without disengaging, that enemy can attack them with a reaction.

Get the High Ground

You can find some stairs, jump on a higher platform, or even Misty Step to a place higher than your enemies.

That way, your ranged character will have a much greater chance to hit the targets while making it more difficult to be hit.

This is significantly easier with spell casters if you have the right spells, reinforcing why it’s important to prepare the right ones.
