In Terraria, there are seven pre-hardmode bosses and ten hardmode bosses, each getting progressively more difficult. With different requirements for spawning each boss, it’s essential to know how to do so individually.
Crucial to progressing past early game is entering hardmode, achieved by defeating the Wall of Flesh. Defeating the Wall of Flesh is a pivotal moment in any Terraria player’s adventure as it unlocks a vast array of new content.
The Wall of Flesh is spawned using the Guide Voodoo Doll, highlighting the importance of voodoo doll knowledge.
This Terraria voodoo doll guide will explain everything you need to know about voodoo dolls; how to get them, what bosses they spawn, and some extra tips and tricks along the way.
What Do Voodoo Dolls Do?
There are two different types of voodoo dolls in Terraria: the Guide Voodoo Doll and the Clothier Voodoo Doll. Both voodoo dolls are equipable accessories and when equipped, will give certain damage sources the ability to kill the voodoo doll’s respective NPC. These sources are damage directly from the player, damage from other NPCs, or damage from falling stars.
Two bosses can be spawned by killing NPCs using a voodoo doll. Killing the Guide spawns the Wall of Flesh and killing the Clothier spawns Skeletron, however, certain criteria must be met.
It’s important to note that the Guide voodoo doll will spawn its boss for the first time, whereas the Clothier voodoo doll is used to respawn a previously defeated boss.
Ultimately, the main use of voodoo dolls is to spawn particular bosses, although they can also be used to reroll the name of your Guide or Clothier. There are a set of names for each NPC in Terraria, and when an NPC spawns, they are randomly assigned one of these names.
If you don’t like the name of your Guide or Clothier, you can kill them and wait for them to respawn. Upon respawning, they will sometimes have a different name. If you’re aiming for a particular name, this is a tedious procedure and will require patience.
How to Use a Voodoo Doll in Terraria
The use of voodoo dolls is straightforward, however, it’s important to be able to differentiate between the two. Simply put, voodoo dolls look like their respective NPC. Having said that, each voodoo doll has different attributes.
The Guide voodoo doll may be thrown into lava. Doing so will kill the Guide and spawn the Wall of Flesh in the Underworld.
Upon killing the Wall of Flesh, the player will enter hardmode, which is a significant moment in the game and is considered by most players the end of the early game.
Prior to spawning the Wall of Flesh, it’s essential to ensure sufficient preparation has been made. For example, a boss platform in the Underworld is crucial to succeed in defeating the final pre-hardmode boss.
On the other hand, the Clothier voodoo doll is immune to lava and therefore will not spawn Skeletron upon contact with it. Instead, the Clothier must be killed by other NPCs, the player or a falling star, while the player has the Clothier voodoo doll equipped. For Skeletron to spawn, the Clothier has to be killed at night.
When an NPC is killed, it will respawn the following day, and move back into its house, provided the conditions for a house are still met. The Terraria day starts at 4:30am and ends at 7:30pm. The NPC can move in at any point in between.
How to Obtain a Voodoo Doll in Terraria
Finding voodoo dolls in Terraria isn’t as easy as you might expect and both are acquired in different ways.
The Guide voodoo doll can be found in the Underworld. Reaching the Underworld is a colossal task for the early game, requiring you to adventure or mine to the bottom of the map. Additionally, you must find a Voodoo Demon, which has a fairly low spawn rate.
On finding a Voodoo Demon, killing it guarantees a Guide voodoo doll drop. Remember to be wary of where you kill it, as the doll dropping into lava would immediately spawn the Wall of Flesh if there is currently a Guide present in your world.
Acquired in the dungeon, the Clothier voodoo doll is more difficult to find than the Guide voodoo doll. It’s dropped by Dark Casters or Angry Bones, with a 1/300 (0.33%) drop chance.
The scarcity of the Clothier voodoo doll is what makes it difficult to obtain, as well as the fact that Skeletron must have been defeated in order to access the dungeon.
Voodoo Doll Tips and Tricks
There are ways to speed up the process of obtaining voodoo dolls. A common method is using a battle potion with a water candle.
Using a battle potion grants the “Battle” buff which doubles the spawn rate of both enemies and critters as well as the maximum number of simultaneous on-screen enemies. The water candle, when placed, increases the spawn rate of enemies and critters by 33% and the maximum number of simultaneous on-screen enemies by 50%.
The combination of these two items dramatically speeds up the process of finding voodoo dolls.
Battle potions are crafted at either a placed bottle or an alchemy station and require three ingredients: 1 bottled water, 1 deathweed, and 1 vertebra/rotten chunk.
Water candles are commonly found in the dungeon or crafted at a crystal ball. The crystal ball must be submerged in water in order to craft the water candle. Additionally, the necessary ingredients are 1 candle and 1 platinum candle.
A water candle can be placed or held to enable the effect. Note that if being held, it can’t simply be in your inventory, and must be selected in your hotbar for this to work.
Placed water candles can be toggled on and off by right-clicking them. This is a useful feature because if you find yourself overwhelmed by the number of enemies spawning, you can simply turn off the water candle and immediately eliminate the increased spawn rates.
If you want to farm Guide voodoo dolls, doing so is not recommended in hardmode and once a mechanical boss has been defeated. This is because the spawning of Voodoo Demons can be overridden by Tortured Souls and Red Devils, reducing their already low spawn rate.
Despite being a rare enemy, Voodoo Demons aren’t detected by the Lifeform Analyzer. Therefore, you should always keep an eye out for these Demons, instead of relying on any accessories you may have equipped.
Farming Guide voodoo dolls can be made easier using the secret world seed “for the worthy”, which replaces all Demons with Voodoo Demons. Furthermore, for every 50th Demon or Voodoo Demon defeated, a Demon banner will be dropped. Banners give a small amount of bonus defense against their respective enemy.
This means that the more Demon banners you have, the more bonus defense you will have against Demons, and therefore the easier it is to farm them.
