One of the most exciting things about playing Hogwarts Legacy is that just like many other RPGs out there, you can level up your character’s skills in various areas.

There are five talent categories that you can invest talent points in this game, including Spells, Dark Arts, Core, Stealth, and Room of Requirement.

This guide discusses which talents you should unlock first, as well as the best talent builds for various styles of play to make the game even more fun and challenging for the player.

You may want to familiarize yourself with all the spells in the game first, so you know what each skill upgrade means.

Now, let’s start with how many talents you can get.

How Many Talents Can You Unlock?

Gaining talent points in Hogwarts Legacy is directly affected by how quickly your character levels up.

Your first talent point is granted at level 5, and then you get an extra one for every level after that until the maximum level 40. This means that you can unlock 35 talent points in total.

Each talent category is also broken down into three skill levels. You can unlock the skills on the first level at level 5, the second one at level 16, and the third at level 22.

The problem is that there are 48 unlockable skills across the five categories that I mentioned earlier, so it is impossible for you to unlock every one of them even at the max level.

Also, once you spend a talent point, you cannot respec/reallocate that point to another skill if you change your mind about it. This means that you have to get it right the first time and make the best decisions as there won’t be a second chance.

Before we talk about the best talent builds in Hogwarts Legacy, you should know the talents that you need to unlock early on in the game. They’ll come in handy in the earlier quests.

Best Talents To Unlock Early

In the earlier stages of the first chapter of the game, there are spells that you may not have learned yet. However, increasing the potency of the spells that you do have will be crucial.

If you’re looking for the best way to spend the first ten talent points that you get up to level 15, then my biggest recommendations will be the skills discussed below.

Accio Mastery

accio mastery

Description: Enemies near a target summoned by Accio are also pulled to you.

With this skill, you can pull multiple enemies close to you at once for a close-range attack. It will be useful in larger battles.

Incendio Mastery

incendio mastery

Description: Casting Incendio unleashes a ring of flame around you.

Confringo is a stronger fire spell, but you learn Incendio first, which is why I recommend spending your talent point on making it stronger in the early stages. With Accio Mastery and Incendio Mastery, you can deal damage to multiple enemies at once.

Disarming Curse

disarming curse

Description: Expelliarmus has the same effect as a curse on enemies. Cursed enemies take increased damage.

Increased damage means you’re more deadly in battle. This is a no-brainer.

Basic Cast Mastery

basic cast mastery

Description: Basic Cast impacts reduce spell cooldowns.

Many of the stronger spells have a cooldown period after you cast them. Basic Cast Mastery cuts down the time that you have to wait for the spell to “reload” before you can use it again.

Spell Knowledge I&II

spell knowledge

Description: A new spell set is added

You start out with one spell set that only allows you to have a four-spell loadout. Spell Knowledge I & 2 unlock extra spell sets so you can have easy access to twelve spells at a time.

Wiggenweld Potency I

wiggenweld potency

Description: Wiggenweld heals you to a greater effect

When you take serious damage, the increased potency of the Wiggenweld potion with this skill upgrade is very useful.

Sense of Secrecy I

sense of secrecy 1

Description: Enemies’ ability to detect you is reduced

The increased potency of the Disillusionment spell with this skill upgrade gives you a better chance of sneaking up on enemies.

Human Demiguise

Description: Allows you to spring while using Disillusionment

Cover more ground more quickly when you need to sneak up on multiple enemies within close range of each other before they realize what’s going on.

Edurus Potion Potency

edurus potion potency

Description: Edurus Potion makes you invulnerable and deflects projectile attacks back to enemies.

Essentially enhances the use of the Edurus Potion from a defense tool to a counter-attack tool. Neat upgrade.

Best Talent Builds

This section is a fun little way of creating your own challenge in Hogwarts Legacy. A talent build in this context basically refers to planning ahead of time which specific skills you’re going to spend your talent points on over the course of the game.

The good thing is, you can have multiple saves in this game, so you can even try out all of the builds and see which one you’re having the most fun with.

The Spellmaster Build

spellmaster

The idea behind the spellmaster build is to use your character with a heavy focus on having a variety of spells in your arsenal.

More than anything else, the spellmaster is very attack-oriented, so you want to fill up your spell slots with as many attacking spells as you can.

This means that you’ll also focus on upgrading attacking spells when it comes to spending your talent points. To achieve that, these are the upgrades that you need to prioritize:

Level 5

  • Incendio Mastery
  • Accio Mastery
  • Levioso Mastery
  • Confringo Mastery
  • Depulso Mastery
  • Stunning Curse
  • Disarming Curse
  • Blood Curse
  • Spell Knowledge I
  • Spell Knowledge II
  • Basic Cast Mastery
  • Wiggenweld Potency I
  • Fertilizer

Level 16

  • Glacius Mastery
  • Descendo Mastery
  • Bombarda Mastery
  • Enduring Curse
  • Spell Knowledge III
  • Stupefy Mastery
  • Wiggenweld Potency II
  • Basic Cast Airborne Absorption
  • Maxima Potion Potency
  • Headache

Level 22+

  • Curse Sapper
  • Stupefy Expertise
  • Thunderbrew Potency
  • Focus Potion Potency
  • Noxious

There are 28 skills here, so you still have 7 to do with as you like. The idea of Spellmaster is a gung-ho, guns-blazing type of wizard/witch that casts spells with reckless abandon, which explains the heavy focus on attack compared to defense.

The Stealthmaster Build

stealthmaster

The Stealthmaster, as the name implies, is a wizard/witch that likes to move lowkey. This character should complete quests quietly, which means stealth combat as often as possible.

If you choose this build, these are the skill upgrades that you need to prioritize:

Level 5

  • Accio Mastery
  • Blood Curse
  • Disarming Curse
  • Spell Knowledge I
  • Spell Knowledge II
  • Basic Cast Mastery
  • Swift
  • Wiggenweld Potency I
  • Sense of Secrecy I
  • Human Demiguise
  • Invisibility Potion Potency

Level 16

  • Slowing Curse
  • Enduring Curse
  • Imperio Mastery
  • Spell Knowledge III
  • Wiggenweld Potency II
  • Revelio Mastery
  • Evasion Absorption
  • Sense of Secrecy II

Level 22+

  • Curse Sapper
  • Petrificus Totalus Mastery

If you really want to play the way the build suggests, then you should also make sure that the spells in your loadout complement these skill upgrades. Try to avoid spells that call too much attention to you.

The Dark Arts Build

dark arts

If you’ve decided to be a dark witch/wizard, these are the skill upgrades that you need to prioritize:

Level 5

  • Accio Mastery
  • Diffindo Mastery
  • Confringo Mastery
  • Blood Curse
  • Disarming Curse
  • Stunning Curse
  • Knockback Curse
  • Spell Knowledge I
  • Spell Knowledge II
  • Basic Cast Mastery
  • Protego Absorption
  • Wiggenweld Potency
  • Edurus Potion Potency
  • Invisibility Potion Potency

Level 16

  • Slowing Curse
  • Enduring Curse
  • Imperio Mastery
  • Crucio Mastery
  • Spell Knowledge III
  • Basic Cast Airborne Absorption
  • Wiggenweld Potency II
  • Sense of Secrecy II
  • Maxima Potion Potency

Level 22+

  • Transformation Mastery
  • Avada Kedavra Mastery
  • Curse Sapper

The Conjurer Build

conjurer

The Conjurer seeks to win battles with as few direct attacks on the enemy as possible. By this, I mean that you must consciously avoid casting spells directly from your wand at the enemy.

You’re allowed to defend attacks, conjure items that attack the enemy, or send counterattacks that result from defending a spell cast by them (For instance, the Stupefy spell that occurs as a result of Protego).

You’re also allowed to use Ancient Magic, and you can control the enemy to do your dirty job for you with the Imperio curse.

Obviously, to be efficient with this style of play, you’ll also have to rely on stealth to an extent. These are the skill upgrades that you need to prioritize to make this work:

Level 5

  • Stunning Curse
  • Blood Curse
  • Spell Knowledge I
  • Spell Knowledge II
  • Basic Cast Mastery
  • Protego Absorption
  • Swift
  • Wiggenweld Potency I
  • Sense of Secrecy I
  • Human Demiguise
  • Invisibility Potion Potency
  • Edurus Potion Potency
  • Fertilizer

Level 16

  • Enduring Curse
  • Imperio Mastery
  • Spell Knowledge III
  • Wiggenweld Potency I
  • Revelio Mastery
  • Protego Expertise
  • Evasion Absorption
  • Stupefy Mastery
  • Sense of Secrecy II
  • Headache
  • Maxima Potion Potency

Level 22+

  • Curse Sapper
  • Stupefy Expertise
  • Protego Mastery
  • Noxious
