There are some powerful weapons in Elden Ring that can only be obtained by finding them in secret areas or through other complicated means.

Some of those items can grant you a significant advantage to advance through certain areas or defeat specific bosses.

One of these special weapons is the lance, which gives you access to new move sets and has the potential to become one of your most valuable tools when it comes to mounted combat. It can be used in some pretty interesting ways that change up how you play when riding your spectral steed.

I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that a weapon made for mounted combat would be extremely good in Elden Ring once you get the horse. Unfortunately, the lance’s location isn’t that easy to spot. Many players might miss it if they are not exploring every inch of the first area since it’s not placed in an area where you’d naturally go through.

If you want to trample your enemies while speeding through the Lands Between on Torrent’s back, here’s how to get the lance in Elden Ring.

Where to Find the Lance in Elden Ring

You will find the lance on the top of a tilted structure, ruins, behind the first castle. In order to get it, you will first need Torment. So if you know how to get the horse in Elden Ring, head to the site of grace near the gate where you got your whistle and go northeast.

Go around the walls surrounding the castle until you find an area where it looks like there’s wind coming out of the ground. That’s a spiritspring.

If you’re riding your spectral steed and you’re near a spiritspring, you can press the jump button to perform a huge jump that will take you to the top of the hill.

Spiritsprings also work as a landing spot. You don’t take any damage from jumping into them from a great height as long as you are riding Torrent.

Once you manage to go all the way up, be careful. You will immediately see a bunch of giants. Try your best not to engage and go through them until you reach the location on the map above, the road behind the castle.

From there, you should be able to find a tilted building near the hills. You can see the structure on the map as well. If you can’t see it, make sure to get the map before going to this area.

Once you find this place, look behind it. You will need to get to the top of that hill in order to jump on the tilted structure. Just circle the area until you find a way to the top. Keep checking the map to avoid going too far away from your goal.

You have to be able to see the tilted structure from the top of the hill. Find an edge where you can run and jump to land exactly on those ruins. After getting to the top of that building, look for an item. Now you have the lance.

How Good is the Lance?

The lance is a weapon that has no blade and is primarily made for mounted combat. In Elden Ring, it is considered a Great Spear. As a weapon of the Great Spear category, it might not be the best you will find throughout the game, but it is terrific when you are still exploring the first area.

The lance scales with Strength and Dexterity, but it does require you to have 20 points in Strength to be able to wield it properly. This is a weapon with a long reach with powerful piercing attacks. It has some attacks with many active frames, especially if you are riding your spectral steed.

The lance comes with a skill called Charge Forth. This skill makes your character point the lance forward and makes a charge attack to pierce the enemy’s body. You are able to guide this attack in order to move it towards enemies that might be moving around. Directing your charge is not easy to do, but it is better than being stuck in a single trajectory and can deal a lot of damage when you manage to pull it off.

The Other Way To Get The Lance

If you have runes to spare, you might be able to get it from Merchant Kale at the Church of Elleh. I wouldn’t recommend doing so since this will cost you precious runes that can be used to buy better items such as the crafting kit or to level up your character.

It doesn’t take too long to find a lance on your own if you know how to do it, and now you do, so just go ahead and get your lance from the top of the tilted building. That way, you can save those runes to do something better, like putting some points in Strength so you can use the lance properly.

Final Thoughts

There are a couple reasons why you should use the lance when riding Torrent. The first is that it’s much easier to charge into battle than swinging your sword and hoping you will hit your target.

Unlike when you are using your blade, the lance doesn’t make it harder for you to aim at the enemies you’re trying to hit when horseback riding. After all, you will be able to attack things in front instead of necessarily swinging your sword on the Torment’s sides.

The other reason is the fact it is decent on foot as well. You might find better weapons for both horseback riding and on foot combat eventually, but it doesn’t mean the lance won’t be useful when you’re first starting. Note that this is a pretty heavy weapon, and equipping it might impact your roll speed, especially when carrying it as a secondary weapon.
