The way of unlocking gold camo, and all the others, has changed in MW 2.
You will have to grind a bit, but it never feels unachievable. However, if you want gold camo for all guns, you will have to work for a while. The good news is, it’s not that hard to unlock gold camo this time.
It might be a good idea to check how to rank up quickly in MW2, since better attachments can make the whole process much faster.

How to Unlock Gold Camo For All Weapons
- Complete the four weapon camo challenges
- Complete the gold challenge
Most of the gold camo challenges will be the same: get 3 kills without dying 10 times. The only exception is the launcher class. Those weapons only require 2 kills without dying.
How Camo Challenges Work
Each gun has different challenges that you must complete to unlock camos. Once unlocked, you can use that camo with any weapon.
That said, things work a little differently when it comes to gold camo because it is a mastery camo. In other words, it’s there pretty much for you to show off that you play a lot with that gun.
It seems that, this time, the developers decided to give you a reason to try different weapons.
You might end up unlocking gold camo by accident if you play enough with your favorite gun. It seems that this was the intended design of MW2. However, gold camo has to be individually unlocked for each firearm.
In order to unlock gold camo, all you have to do is to complete a series of challenges that are listed in the weapon’s Gunsmith section.
Once you get to the Gunsmith panel, check the customization tab. There, you will find all the requirements to unlock all camos, including gold and platinum.
Each category of weapon will pretty much have the same challenges.
So, for instance, to unlock gold camo for the M4 or the Kastov 762, you will have to do the same challenges because they are both Assault Rifles.
Firstly, you have to level up the weapon so you can actually unlock the challenge. Then, you have to complete the four challenges to unlock the gold camo challenge.
Here are the Assault Rifle challenges:
- Level 1: Get 50 kills with the M4
- Level 8: Get 50 kills while ADS with the M4
- Level 14: Get 10 double kills with the M4
- Level 19: Get 15 kills from behind with the M4
Since things will be slightly different if you try to unlock gold camo for an SMG, don’t forget to check the challenges for your gun in the Gunsmith section.
With that out of the way, it’s time to complete the challenges that unlock gold camo.
This challenge is pretty straightforward; you must manage to get 3 kills without dying 10 times. This task is much easier than getting ten double kills or 15 kills from behind, so you should do fine from now on.
Once you get that done, you can go to the camo section in the customization tab of any weapon and equip the over-the-top golden camo.
Tips and Tricks to Unlock Gold Camo
There are a few things that you can do to make the grind easier. First, make sure to optimize your gun.
The weapon I was using to get gold camo was the M4, so I made sure I had the best M4 loadout in CoD Modern Warfare 2 before the grind started.
A good loadout is essential, but it doesn’t stop there. Some perks can help you stay undetected, while others can help you track the enemy.
The goal here is to show you where enemy soldiers are going so you can chase them and hopefully shoot them in the back.
Since you will have the surprise element if everything happens as planned, you will also have a much greater chance of getting double kills.
This is my perks recommendation for unlocking gold camo for Assault Rifles:
- Base Perk: Tracker. With this perk, enemies leave behind a footprint trail, and enemy death markers are visible. Kill markers are hidden from the enemy team.
- Bonus Perk: Cold-Blooded. You are undetectable by AI targeting systems and thermal optics. You don’t trigger High Alert warnings. You don’t highlight in enemy Tactical Cameras, Recon Drones, and Spotter Scopes.
- Ultimate Perk: Ghost. With this one, you become undetectable by UAVs, Portable Radars, and Heartbeat Sensors.
You can choose any other base perk, but it is crucial that you use Tracker. Knowing where your enemies are going, combined with not letting them know where you are, is a powerful combination.
Although this is not necessarily the best way to play the game at all times, it does help to get those kills from behind that you need to unlock gold camo in MW2.
The Easiest Way to Unlock Gold Camo
The best way to ensure that you will quickly complete the challenges is to find what works for you and repeat it until you finish.
As I mentioned previously, using the right perks goes a long way, but there is more. Playing Hardpoint, Domination, or Invasion will help you tremendously.
Hardpoint and Domination are modes in which you will constantly be flanking your adversaries.
There are constant gunfights going on in those maps. For that reason, chances are you will get many kills from behind in a single match.
Not only that, this mode frequently results in many players grouping up in specific points, which also helps with the needed double kills.
How to Equip Gold Camo
In order to equip your camo, just go to the Gunsmith section of your desired weapon, select gold camo and press the assigned button or key to equip it.
Unfortunately, some players are having trouble equipping gold camo on PC due to a glitch.
If that’s your case, hover your mouse on an adjacent camo that you can equip and use the A, S, D, and W keys to navigate the UI and highlight gold camo.
Once that’s done, press the space bar, and you will have it equipped.
How to Unlock Platinum Camo
Now you know how to unlock gold camo, so you might as well get to work. However, players who care for mastery camos rarely stop in the first one.
