Reportedly, Horizon Forbidden West takes on average of between 35 and 50 hours to complete. And while that doesn’t come as a surprise considering how large the Horizon Forbidden West map is, players can’t be expected to complete the entire story in one go.
In such a case, you’d ideally want to save your progress so you can start from the exact place where you left off. But, how do you do that? Is it automatic or do you need to do something in order to save your in-game progress?
After we played the game for some time, we found out the best ways on how to save progress in Horizon Forbidden West.
How to Save Progress
The good news here is that Horizon Forbidden West is one of those games that feature a comprehensive autosave system. This basically means that your in-game progress will be saved automatically from time to time. To take advantage of this feature, you don’t need to do anything.
Just play the game and every now and again, the game will autosave for you.
It’s also worth mentioning that there is also a manual way to save your in-game progress. All you need to do is visit a campfire. Campfires are spread throughout the entire world of the Forbidden West so you won’t have any trouble finding them.
The very first one is located on the path down to the Chainscrape village.
When you see a campfire, interact with it. Then, you’ll have two options – quick save, and manual save. If you want to quickly save your progress, simply click the triangle button.
If you want to manually create a save slot that you can then specifically go back to, click the square button on your controller and follow the next steps to create your save.
Campfires are very handy, especially because they can also be used for free fast traveling.
Where Do You Respawn After You Get Killed In Horizon Forbidden West?
In the event you get eliminated – be it from fall damage or because you didn’t learn how to crouch and use the silent strike mechanic, you will be respawned back to the last place you saved.
So, if 5 minutes after you quick-saved next to a campfire you get eliminated, that will be where you will be respawned. Usually, you won’t be taken too far back.
But, if you play the game on the hardest difficulty, we highly recommend that you make regular saves when you have the opportunity to just in case.
What Happens If The Game Crashes?
In the unfortunate event your console or game crashes, you will respawn back where the game last saved you. In other words, if you just saved at a campfire and the game crashes, that’s where you will respawn when you boot the game back up.
My console accidentally disconnected from the power in the middle of playing, and I hardly lost any progress. Keep in mind that this was quite early on in the game and I hadn’t yet used a campfire to make the save myself.
This means that the in-game autosave feature is very handy so if something like that happens to you, you have nothing to worry about as you will hardly lose any progress.
