The map in Horizon Forbidden West is huge. Reportedly, it’s over 5 miles, which is about the same as the map in Horizon Zero Dawn – if not bigger. That’s a lot of distance to cover on foot.

It’s going to take you about half an hour to cross the entire map – even if you’re riding a machine and you know your way around. And if you’re on foot, well…much longer.

Fortunately, the developers of Horizon Forbidden West included a teleportation system called Fast Travel. With Fast Travel, you can go from place to place in seconds – without having to ride a tamed machine or walk across the vast lands and face danger.

But how do you fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West?

In this article, we will show you everything you need to know about fast traveling, the various ways you can do it, and the resources you need to facilitate your teleportation across the map.

How to Unlock Fast Travel in Horizon Forbidden West

You’ll unlock the fast travel mechanic as soon as you discover your first campfire. This will happen relatively early on in the game. Do note that in order to use that first campfire to fast travel, you will need to have unlocked at least one other location or campfire that is eligible for fast traveling.

How to Fast Travel for Free in Horizon Forbidden West

If you’re just getting started and don’t have a whole lot of resources, using campfires to get from place to place is perfect. Why? Because it’s free. You don’t need to pay anything to anyone in order to use the campfire fast travel system.

However, the downside to campfires is that they can be pretty spread out, which means that you can’t go from one place to another on-demand. You’ve literally got to be next to a campfire in order to teleport.

Another downside to using campfires is that they are hardly in locations where machines and enemies are present. This is because they are mostly present around merchants who are traveling and in villages. In other words, if things get heated, you won’t be able to teleport and escape certain death.

You also need to manually discover every campfire location in order to unlock it. If you don’t do that, you won’t be able to teleport to and from that particular campfire.

To fast travel using campfires, simply go next to a campfire, press the O button on your controller, and select your destination. Do note that you can fast travel to other campfires and main regions that you’ve uncovered. You can’t travel to any regions that are populated by certain mobs and wildlife, quests, and unexplored locations even if they’re on the map.

An Alternative Way to Fast Travel in Horizon Forbidden West

The second, and arguably better way to fast travel is by making use of fast travel packs. If you don’t know where to get fast travel packs, then it’s a good idea to read out guide on the topic.

When you have fast travel packs in your inventory, you can travel from anywhere on the map (doesn’t need to be close to a campfire) to a destination of your choice. Again, do note that you can’t fast travel to quests, locations populated by wildlife or machines, or while falling.

The benefit of fast travel packs is that you can escape certain death in case things get heated.

In order to fast travel using the fast travel packs, all you need to do is click the main big rectangular button on your controller, head over to a destination that you want to teleport to and hold the R2 button. Then, it will ask you to confirm, and you’ll be on your way.
