I, too, spent some time wondering why I couldn’t make my own campfire. I know the game allowed it, but I probably skipped the tutorial that explained it.
Campfires allow you to cook anywhere, which is helpful in many circumstances.

Use Flints and Wood
You need to drop a flint stone next to the wood you chopped from a tree and strike the flint with a metal weapon.
This is the part that took me a while to figure out. I was striking the flint with blunt weapons and trying to burn the wood with a flame thrower, but it was much simpler than I thought.
So, once you do that, the wood will start burning, and you can roast your meals there.
If you have a pot, you can use it on the campfire you just made to cook many different dishes.
What Should You Learn in TOTK?
The game is filled with crazy mechanics. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an open-world sandbox game that lets you do many things.
However, it would be best to learn the basics before going for the bigger map where the real game takes place.
So, learn how to sneak in TOTK, and make sure you know how to make and switch weapons.
It might be a good idea to check how to duplicate shields and weapons, too, so you can use stronger weapons for longer.
