Elden Ring is a very immersive game and a very peculiar power fantasy. It is not unusual to see references to a Dragon’s Tooth or a Dragon’s Heart in tabletop RPGs.

Not because they are essential items, but often because players want a trophy after overpowering a tremendous challenge.

Elden Ring goes a step further. It does reward you with an item that references your victory over a dragon, but it also grants you a way to get something from it.

Dragon hearts are your currency when it comes to learning dragon incantations in Elden Ring, and they can make you use the power of the dragons you defeated against their own kind or other enemies.

However, not all dragons drop the dragon heart item for some reason. You will be awarded a heart if you beat Flying Dragon Agheel and some others after you defeat the giant dragon in Dragonsbarrow. However, this is hardly enough to get most dragon incantations in the game.

So if what you want is more incantations, you probably want to know where to find all dragon hearts in Elden Ring. Don’t worry; we’ve got you. This guide will show you the location of all dragons in the game that drop their hearts once defeated.

Where to Get Dragon Hearts in Elden Ring

Dragon Heart 2

Elden Ring might reward players for defeating dragons, but it doesn’t do it in a coherent way. Some dragons don’t drop their hearts, and some drop multiple hearts for some reason.

Here’s the name of each dragon that drops a Dragon Heart and how many you get once they’re defeated.

Flying Dragon Agheel

Most likely the first dragon you will see in the game. Agheel can be found in Limgrave. This is the easiest dragon to fight in Elden Ring, and it can be done really early in the game.

This dragon will land on Agheel Lake once you get close to a bunch of nobles near the Dragon Burnt Ruins. Once Agheel lands, it will stand there until defeated.

Flying Dragon Agheel drops a single Dragon Heart once defeated.

Flying Dragon Greyll

Flying Dragon Greyll is like a much more powerful version of Agheel, but in a place that makes it much harder to fight. It has the same weak spots and move set, and it deals way more damage and grants 20 times more runes when defeated.

Greyll is weak to Frostbite and Thrust Damage, so remember to use weapons and spells that can help you win because it will be rough. You will find him on a bridge, near the place where you fight the Night’s Cavalry of Caelid.

Elder Dragon Greyoll

Elder Dragon Greyoll is the giant dragon you find in Dragonsbarrow. Many regular-sized dragons roam near Greyoll, and it can be a pain to fight the Elden one if those other dragons decide to go after you.

Defeating the giant dragon causes you to receive five Dragon Hearts as a reward, which is more than enough for you to exchange for a few good dragon incantations.

Decaying Ekzykes

Decaying Ekzykes is a white dragon that seems to be affected by the scarlet rot. When you see it, it will be sleeping on the highway in the south of Caelid. Look for the Cathedral of Dragon Communion; the dragon will be close to it.

You get a single Dragon Heart for putting this sickened dragon out of its misery, but watch out for its powerful Scarlet Rot breath.

Borealis, the Freezing Fog

Borealis, the Freezing Fog, is an optional boss. You can find it on the Frozen Lake to the Northeast of the game’s map, in Mountaintops of the Giants.

You only get a single heart from defeating this boss but it also unlocks Borealis’s Mist at the Dragon Communion Altar at the Cathedral of Dragon Communion in Caelid.

Glintstone Dragon Smarag

Glintstone Dragon Smarag is another optional fight and not the toughest one. It can be found at Liurnia of the Lakes, and it drops a single Dragon Heart once defeated.

Glinstone Dragon Adula

You will first see Glinstone Dragon Adula roaming in the Three Sisters area. After it receives enough damage, it will teleport away to the Cathedral of Manus Celes.

If you defeat it, Adula will drop three Dragon Hearts.

Great Wyrm Theodorix

Great Wyrm Theodorix can be found in the frozen river located to the north of Albinauric Rise, an area within the Mountaintops of the Giants.

This is an optional boss. You get three Dragon Hearts for defeating it. It also unlocks the Theodorix’s Magma Incantation at the Cathedral of Dragon Communion.

Magma Wyrm

There are actually three different Magma Wyrm boss fights, but they don’t seem different enough to get a unique name each.

Although they might be similar, they have different stats and grant different rewards. However, they all give a Dragon Heart once defeated.

There is a Dragon Wyrm inside the Volcano Manor Legacy Dungeon. Another one in the lava lake located near Seethewater Terminus in Mt. Gelmir, and finally one inside Gael Tunnel at Calid.

Defeating the Magma Dragon in the South of Fort Laiedd unlocks the Magma Breath Incantation.

Magma Wyrm Makar

Magma Wyrm Makar is another optional dragon boss fight. It can be found in the northern area of Liurnia of the Lakes, in Ruin-Strewn Precipice. It is an aggressive Fire Wyrm guarding the entrance to Altus Plains from any who attempt to bypass the lift.

You get a single Dragon Heart from defeating Magma Wyrm Makar.

Moonlight Dragons

There are three dragons near Moonlight Altar. They will be found on the west side of it.

Each of these dragons grants you a Dragon Heart when defeated.

What Can You Do With Dragon Hearts

Dragon Hearts are your currency to get new spells. So as long as you know where to buy Dragon Incantations in Elden Ring, you will have access to several different Dragon Powers.

Some incantations allow your character to use the full power of a dragon. That way, you will have access to the power of fire breath spells, dragon claw attacks, the Elder Dragon Roar, and so much more.

Dragon Incantations Available in Limgrave

There are three different Dragon Incantations for you to get at the Church of Dragon Communion; each costs a single Dragon Heart.

  • Dragonclaw
  • Dragonfire
  • Dragonmaw

Dragon Incantations Available in Caelid

The Cathedral of Dragon Communion in Caelid has many other Dragon Incantations. More will show up as you defeat certain dragons and unlock new powers.

These are the ones you can get for a single heart:

  • Dragonfire: your head becomes the one of a Dragon before you use a fire breath attack
  • Magma Breath: much like the one before, but your character spits magma
  • Glintstone Breath: much like the one above, but your character’s breath deals magic damage
  • Rotten Breath: This is Ekzykes’ dragon breath, and it causes damage over time
  • Dragonclaw: Your hand becomes a Dragon Claw, and you use it against your foes
  • Dragonmaw: Your head becomes the one of a Dragon, and you bite your foe

These are the Incantations you can get by spending two hearts:

  • Agheel’s Flame: you float and use a powerful, lasting fire breath attack with a great range
  • Theodorix’s Magma: Another Magma breath attack, but it makes larger volumes of magma
  • Smarag’s Glinstone Breath: Much like Agheel’s Flame, but it deals magic damage
  • Ekzykes’s Decay: Much like Agheel’s Flame, but it causes damage over time
  • Borealis’s Mist: Much like Agheel’s Flame, but it causes frostbite

The one below is the only dragon incantation that costs three hearts:

  • Greyoll’s Roar: When you use the Elder Dragon Greyoll’s Roar, all enemies in a large area have their attack damage temporarily reduced.

Final Thoughts

Dragon Heart

Dragon Hearts are a valuable resource for Faith-based characters that want to use some dragon magic in their playthrough.

Having many different breath weapons and destroying dozens of enemies with a single spell does make you feel powerful. This is precisely what makes spellcasting so much fun in this game.

Agheel is not that hard to defeat, and Greyoll can be cheesed, so you have access to at least six Dragon Hearts very early in the game if you follow all our tips.

That is more than enough to buy a few different Dragon Breath Incantations, allowing you to have access to Scarlet Rot, Fire, and Magic damage. This will let you deal good damage against most enemies that you will find throughout the game.

Then, if you want to go for Dragon Claw or something like that for that Physical Damage, just do it. It will really depend on what you want and how many hearts you have to spend.

Please note that going for the Elder Dragon Greyoll and getting many Dragon Hearts early in the game might cause you to trivialize certain enemies in the first area of the game.

However, if you don’t care about it at all and just want to use the power of the dragons to burn and slash everything in your way, have fun with all the Dragon Incantations.
