Margit, the Fell Omen in Elden Ring, is one of the first bosses that truly show how hard Elden Ring can be. You will need some good strategies if you want to take him down, and chances are you will need to level up a bit too before being able to face him.

While it’s tempting to dive into the fight headfirst, especially after learning its primary move set, don’t underestimate his power. He is deceivingly fast and has an extremely long reach with his melee attacks.

Margit, the Fell Omen is also a caster and is able to materialize weapons and use them against you. He can even throw them at a great distance, and a shield won’t entirely prevent you from taking damage. If you’re not prepared, you’ll find yourself back to a site of grace in seconds! However, he isn’t impossible to beat.

Like any other boss in a soulsborne game, you need a bit of patience, knowledge of the creature’s attacks, the right strategy, and some brute force when the time comes.

If you use the tactics we will provide, you can take advantage of his moves to deal damage much faster. So, if you are having trouble going through this boss, here’s how to defeat Margit, the Fell Omen in Elden Ring.

How to Beat Margit, the Fell Omen

Margit is not that hard to deal with during its first phase, but once you deal enough damage to him, he will start using new attacks that are much more aggressive and powerful.

If you are having trouble with Margit, especially considering that he is a mandatory boss who is on your way to access a Legacy Dungeon, you might want to use everything at your disposal to get rid of this guy.

Use Margit’s Shackle

If you know Where to find patches, you should definitely do that first. Make sure to spare Patches so he can open a shop. You need the Magit’s Shackle that he sells so you can make this boss battle much more manageable.

Margit’s Shackle is a fetish bathed in golden magic. Shackles were used to bind the accursed people called the Omen, and these ones were made to keep a particular Omen under strictest confinement. Though faint, the shackles still retain vestiges of power — enough to trap the once-bound Margit on earth, if only for a short time.

Patches sells the item for 5000 runes. During his first phase of this boss battle, you get to use the item up to twice. Using Margit’s Shackle will bind him to the ground temporarily. Note that you won’t be able to use this item anymore once he pulls off his hammer.

Ideally, save the second use for when his hit points are almost halved. That way, you get to bind the boss to the ground and get some free swings that will cause a decent amount of damage without having to deal as much with his second phase.

Level Up Your Character

Let’s be honest; Margit is strong. He is so strong that you might have to swing your sword dozens of times to take half of his health, but it might all be because you reached him quickly.

Although getting to this boss fight is a great feat, doing it too fast might result in you having an underpowered character. It doesn’t mean that the fight will be impossible, but unless you are a parry master, it means that you might have some trouble dealing with this boss.

Although Elden Ring might feel like a slow-paced action game at times, it really is an Action RPG. Stats matter and might significantly change the perceived difficulty of a boss battle.

See if you can defeat the Flying Dragon Agheel and maybe try to beat the Tree Sentinel before showing up for this boss battle. Break some glowing skulls and spend those runes to make your character stronger.

If your character is a spell caster, buy sorcery spells to become stronger. All that will make the battle easier when you finally decide to face Margit, the Fell Omen.

Look for a Summon Sign

Margit’s Shackle does help you during the first phase of the boss, but that is as far as it’ll take you. Once the boss starts using his hammer, you will have to deal with a flurry of attacks that can quickly end your stamina when it hits your shield.

His multiple attacks reach far, deal a lot of damage, and are very fast. Getting caught by one of his combos will probably send you back to a site of grace, especially if you have taken some damage already.

You might want another character to become a target so you can hit Margit from behind, and that’s precisely why you might want to summon someone to help you out.

In this fight, you get to count on Sorcerer Rogier as an allied summon. He doesn’t deal a lot of damage, but he is enough to keep Margit distracted and keep chipping his health little by little from a distance.

Use the Spirit Calling Bell

Save your spirits to the second phase. Once Margit, the Fell Omen starts using his hammer, wait for him to start talking or miss a hammer attack so you can use your Lone Wolf Ashes.

The wolves work very well because they are very mobile. What you want here are more targets that will cause the boss to be distracted, not more damage.

Since the wolves move quickly, they might stay alive for long enough to distract Margit, allowing you to safely hit him a few times. They might also help you keep your summoned ally alive for longer.

Alternatively, you save the wolves for when your summoned ally is dead. That way, you might be able to safely attack Margit a few extra times.

Use the Glintstone Stars Sorcery

If you can use sorceries, this battle will be so much easier for you than it’ll be to anyone playing with a melee build. It will be even easier if you are able to use the Glintstone Stars sorcery against Margit.

This spell produces three shooting stars that attack and damage your enemies from a distance. It can be purchased from Sorceress Sellen for 3000 runes at Waypoint Ruins in Limgrave.

This sorcery costs only 14 FP per cast and uses a single memory slot. It only requires 12 points of Intelligence, so you can probably use it without any issues.

How to Deal With Margit’s Attacks

During his first phase, Margit is very easy to dodge. His attacks are very telegraphed, making it relatively easy to avoid them if you are paying attention. Try to roll towards his back since it will make most of his attacks whiff, but be careful since he can use his tail to attack you. Like before, his tail attack is not hard to dodge, but you better pay attention.

Margit will also throw magic daggers at you sometimes. You can easily strafe those, so you don’t really have to worry much about it either.

Once you get to the second phase is when things get tricky. Margit’s attacks become faster, and he uses long combos with multiple hits. This time is when you want to avoid his attacks and stay away from him as much as possible. Don’t try to be aggressive since it most likely won’t work out for you.

Instead, roll and move out of his way until he tries to slam you with his hammer. That’s when you can dodge forward and land a couple of hits before quickly moving away. It might be annoying to keep doing it, but it is the safest way to deal with this boss.

What Do You Get From Beating Margit?

Like any other boss, especially mandatory ones, Margit provides a pretty substantial amount of runes. When you defeat it, you get 12000 runes that I recommend you to spend immediately.

Losing that much currency will be frustrating, to say the least. Return to the Castleward Tunnel site of grace and travel to a merchant or level up your character while it’s safe.

You also get a Talisman Pouch from Margit. This item basically provides one more talisman slot for your character.

Final Thoughts

Margit is a really hard boss for melee builds, and it can be frustrating at some point. When I didn’t know about his Shackle, it took me several hours of grinding and a couple more of fighting before I was finally able to take him down.

However, you don’t have to go through any of that. If your character is a spellcaster, things will be much easier for you already. If not, you can always try calling for allies, summoning Spirit Ashes, and buying Margit’s Shackle from patches.

I’m sure that the battle will be much more manageable if you follow all our tips. With the help of a sorcerer, some wolves, and a magic item designed to stop the boss, you will finally be able to venture inside the Stormhill Legacy Dungeon.

Don’t forget to level up, though. All the tips in the world won’t prevent you from dying quickly, so you might want some extra hit points or more damage.

Now, go settle the score with Margit and spend those runes well once you beat him.
