If you’re a fan of the Dark Souls series, you know how important it is to have the best equipment possible in order to survive the toughest of fights against the most difficult of enemies.

The Spirit Calling Bell can be one of the most excellent items you can acquire to give yourself an edge against your foes and help make Elden Ring that much easier to survive.

This is an essential tool because it can be used to call the souls of the dead so that they can help you in battle.

The Spirit Calling Bell is relatively easy to miss, especially if you’re the kind of player that never looks back.

Here’s how to find the Spirit Calling Bell in Elden Ring.

Where to Get the Spirit Calling Bell

First, you need to get Torrent, your spectral steed. So, if you know how to get the horse in Elden Ring, do that first. Once you meet Melina, you will be able to ride your spectral steed, but you will also be able to level up in Elden Ring.

In order to get there, you will need to avoid the Tree Sentinel that is roaming near the first site of grace in Limgrave. Go around it and move northeast. Remember to rest at both the first site of grace and the one within the church.

With that out of the way, you can Fast Travel back to the Church of Elleh, or you can also just walk there since it’s not that far at all. There’s where you will find a new NPC who you need to talk to.

Once you are again in the church, look around for the new NPC. You will find what seems to be a young witch who will talk to you and eventually ask you if you can summon Torrent. Once you say that you do, the Spirit Calling Bell will be yours.

How to Use the Spirit Calling Bell

You don’t have to pull out your bell in order to use it, but your character will get the bell to summon spirits when you use an Ash.

Spirits will show up and serve as targets that distract your enemies or even as extra damage output.

Unfortunately, you can’t summon spirits whenever you want. There are a few conditions to be met for you to call some allies. Luckily, most areas of the map with too many enemies are also areas where you can summon the spirits to help you.

The conditions to use the bell are quite simple; you can only summon spirits if there are enemies nearby, and there is a purple gravestone icon on the left of your screen.

The ashes might provide you with significantly different helpers. Some ashes summon a bunch of creatures, others a few stronger ones, and there are even ashes that will call a single, powerful fighter, spellcaster, or even monster that will fight alongside you.

Where to Find More Spirit Ashes

There are many ways to get the Spirit Ashes that summon allies in Elden Ring. There are also some hidden in dungeons, in random chests sometimes they might be dropped as loot as well or be a reward for ending a boss. For instance, you can get the Noble Sorcerer Ashes if you manage to beat the Erdtree Burial Watchdog.

Just by exploring the game and going through its many dungeons, you will undoubtedly find at least a few Spirit Ashes to help you when you get surrounded by enemies. They can also be quite helpful against certain bosses, especially those that can withstand a few hits from the boss, giving you the time to safely land some extra hits.

How to Summon Wolves in Elden Ring

The Lone Wolf Spirit Ash is the first one you get from the same witch who grants you the bell. Similarly, if you only get the bell once you hit the Roundtable Hold, you can buy the Lone Wolf Spirit Ash from the same twins who will have a Spirit Calling Bell for sale.

Although the name is Lone Wolf, this Spirit Ash summons three wolves to help you fight your enemies.

How to Summon Dogs in Elden Ring

The only spirit dogs you can summon in Elden Ring are the Rotten Stray ones. They are probably the spirit of dogs that were consumed by the Scarlet Rot. So, you might have gotten somewhat near them if you managed to escape the Sellia Crystal Tunnel.

The Rotten Stray Spirit Ash can be found in Caelid, within the Sellia Catacombs.

How to Summon Jellyfish in Elden Ring

This is by far one of my favorite Spirit Ashes. The Jellyfish work somewhat as a tank and as bait. It doesn’t deal much damage, but it is pretty good at driving powerful enemies away from you. It can also poison your enemies, but its damage isn’t anything impressive.

The Jellyfish you summon by using Spirit Ashes is called Aurelia. In order to get it and be able to summon it, you must first find Roderika.

Head to the Stormhill Shack; there will be a site of grace with the same name right in front of it. There, you will find Roderika. Talk to her until you get the item you need to summon Aurelia.

How to Upgrade Spirit Ashes

After a while, once you complete Roderika’s quest, you will be able to upgrade your spirit ashes.

You will meet her at Stormhill Shack, and you will have to talk to a blacksmith named Master Hweg. Once you promise to watch over Roderika and convince her to learn spirit tuning, she will open a shot right in front of where the blacksmith is located. There, you will be able to upgrade your Spirit Ashes.

It’s not free, though, and you will need Grave Floveworts or Ghost Gloveworts to do so. Those items can also be found all around the world of Elden Ring, as loot or in dungeons.

The Best Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring

Elden Ring is a game that has a lot of variety when it comes to spells, weapons, and summoned companions. But even though most of what you find is viable, there are items that seem way better than others.

In the case of Spirit Ashes, certain Ashes are so good they are called Legendary Spirit Ashes.

So if you come across one of them, like Lhutel the Headless or Black Knife Tiche, know that you have there something that might make your life so much easier.

How to Upgrade Spirit Ashes

Spirit Ashes can be upgraded, much like your gear. In order to do so, you must turn Roderika into a Spirit Turner. Talk to her in Stormhill Shack until she has no dialogue left.

After that, you will need to find the Chrysalids’ Memento. It will be near a pile of bodies under a dead troll in Stormhill Castle. After that, go to Roderika and talk to her until she has nothing different to say to you. Then, to go Roundtable Hold to find Roderika there.

Note that sometimes, players might find Roderika there even if they haven’t handled her the Chrysalids’ Memento.

Either way, now what you need to do is to convince Roderika to start Spirit Turning. To do that, you will have to talk to her and Blacksmith Hewg many times until she decides to open her own shop.

Final Thoughts

The Spirit Calling Bell is an essential item that will make the game much more manageable in certain areas. It is also quite helpful when fighting formidable enemies or when you are severely outnumbered.

Unfortunately, it is not unusual to see players, especially new ones, never looking back while progressing the game and missing NPC storylines. That can cause them to miss important items, the ability to upgrade them, and much more.

Now, you know exactly what to do in order to find the Spirit Calling Bell, where to find new Spirit Ashes, and even how to upgrade them. This means that, many times, you won’t even have to switch Spirits based on their power. You can keep using the ones you like by upgrading them after they start feeling a bit weak.

With all that information and the Spirit Calling Bell, you are ready to face most threats in the Lands Between. Go out there and try your bell against different enemies and see what works better with your character and against more troubling NPCs.

Elden Ring might be a bit hard, but it can also be made much easier by playing it cleverly and using all the tools that the game provides.
