Sellia, Town of Sorcery, is an abandoned town located on the eastern portion of Caelid. When you explore the ghost town, most of the entrances are sealed by a magic blue barrier – or a seal.

Exploring the town is a dangerous affair because of all the invisible wizards. One wrong step, and you’ll receive a brutal welcome from numerous glintstone projectiles.

These magic seals contain precious items and even a boss fight. With a bit of bit exploring, you can find out how to break these barriers.

In this guide, I’ll teach you how to unlock the magic seal at Sellia, Town of Sorcery, in Elden Ring.

Sellia’s Secret

Sellia, Town of Sorcery, is found in the eastern area of Caelid.

Sellia

The proper way to reach the location is to follow the main path of Caelid until you reach it. You can start from the Smoldering Church east of Summonwater Village in Limgrave.

There’s a shortcut to that area by taking the consecutive spirit spring jumps north of the Third Church of Marika.

The faster way to find Sellia is by purposely using the transporter chest in Dragon-Burnt Ruins at Agheel Lake in Limgrave. Then, you can quickly leave Sellia Crystal Tunnel to get to Sellia, Town of Sorcery.

Once you exit the tunnel, simply follow the shore to the southeast to find the Sellia Under-Stair Site of Grace. The abandoned town easily sticks out as a noticeable landmark compared to the decaying environment in Caelid.

There’s a message nearby telling you to stop by the southern gate and a white phantom pointing towards the general area. The same message also appears in other areas near the Town of Sorcery.

Following this message is key to understanding how to unlock the magic seal at Sellia, Town of Sorcery.

The message directs you to the southern gate of Sellia, Town of Sorcery. If you’re using the main path, you’ll pass by Sellia Gateway. But if you’re coming from the swamp, you’ll have to pass by the Town of Sorcery and make your way south.

Either way, you’ll reach Gowry’s Shack. It’s a broken-down shack with a lone sage sitting inside it. Make sure to take care of the overgrown scarlet rot-blighted dog before talking to him, as the dog is infamous for killing the sage.

His name is Sage Gowry, and he’s asking for a favor from you. In return, he’ll impart the secrets for the nearby Town of Sorcery.

Sage Gowry tasks you with retrieving the unalloyed gold needle. He hopes to use this item to cure a girl named Millicent who is afflicted by scarlet rot.

To find the unalloyed gold needle for Sage Gowry’s questline, you have to venture to the Heart of Aeonia. The location isn’t that far from the shack; just head west to find it.

Gowry

Look for large white branches covering a vast clearing, and once you venture inside, a boss fight would begin.

You’ll be up against Commander O’Neil, a formidable foe who hits like a truck. He can also summon the spirit of soldiers to assist him during this fight. Even after killing these soldiers, he can call a whole array of new units to fight.

Fortunately, you’ll fight him in a wide-open area. As long as you’re patient and don’t become greedy, this encounter is easy while on horseback. The commander’s attacks are slow and telegraphed. Watch out for some of area of effect attacks.

Commander

It’s a different story if you decide to fight him on foot though. Nevertheless, if you’re adept at using the parry mechanic, this will be a satisfying boss encounter for you. His slow attacks are easy to react to, and you can reliably hit consecutive parries.

When he starts swinging his halberd around and gusts of air follow, dodge away. This attack also applies scarlet rot if you’re hit by it.

Lastly, if you need additional help, you can summon an NPC to help you on this fight. Just north of the battle is the Inner Aeonia Site of Grace. There’s a summoning sign there to call upon Polyanna, Millicent’s sister.

After defeating Commander O’Neil, you’ll receive the Commander’s Standard halberd and the Unalloyed Gold Needle.

The newly unlocked Heart of Aeonia Site of Grace is also an excellent reset point to farm the Halo Scythe. The Halo Scythe is one of the best faith scaling weapons in Elden Ring, and it’s highly sought after for its weapon art.

Return to Sage Gowry and hand him the Unalloyed Gold Needle. He’ll reward you with a note containing Sellia’s secrets for your efforts.

The Sellia’s Secret note reads, “The Town of Sellia hides the source. Light three flames atop candle towers to break the seal.” This note answers how to unlock the magic seal at Sellia, Town of Sorcery.

Though you can break the barrier without receiving the note from Sage Gowry, handing him the Unalloyed Gold Needles allows you to cure Millicent at the Church of Plague.

Millicent’s questline is a lengthy and tragic series of events that takes you across several areas in the Lands Between.

Breaking the Blue Barriers

Now that you’ve learned the secret from the Gowry’s note, you can attempt to unlock the magic seal at Sellia, Town of Sorcery.

From Gowry’s Shack, head into the abandoned town and look on the rooftops. You’ll notice that there are three towers that contain an unlit candle at the top. Once you light all three of these, you would have broken the blue barriers.

The easiest way to climb on these rooftops is to travel to the north gate, near the golden tree with the Golden Seed. Then, look to the southwest to find your first tower.

tower 1 1

There’s a crack between the railings beckoning you to jump down on the branch. Climb to the top of the tower and light the candle then go back.

Now, return to the steps and jump on the branch leading to the rooftops. Platform your way to the nearest tower towards the east. If the next rooftop looks too high for you try to double jump on the lowest side of the roof.

tower 2

After lighting the second tower, the last tower is to the west. There are some enemies on the rooftop that you could take care of first so they won’t disrupt your platforming.

tower 3

Additionally, there’s a teardrop scarab on the way as well. If you get too close to it, it’s going to teleport away to another branch. A spell or incantation works wondrously here.

After lighting all three candles, you’ll receive a message indicating that a seal has been broken somewhere in town. You’ll only unlock the magic seal once all candles have been lit. Of course, there are other ways to scale the rooftops with a perceptive eye for platforming.

Now, you’re free to explore Sellia, Town of Sorcery. Look for the painting near a tree and examine it to have the Redmane Painting. Artist’s Paintings give special loot if you managed to find the vantage point of the landscape depicted in the painting.

Redmane

The Redmane Painting’s location can be found near the Minor Erdtree at Dragonbarrow, which is to the northeast of Caelid. You can teleport to Bestial Sanctum Site of Grace and follow the path south.

The platforming required to reach the area is very dangerous and you could die from a small slip up. If you manage to reach the painter, you’ll receive the Rain of Arrows: Ash of War.

Another noteworthy loot is the Spelldrake Talisman +1; an essential item for defeating Rennala and fighting the enemies in the Raya Lucaria Academy.

There’s also an Imbued Sword Key that you could use in the Four Belfries in Liurnia of the Lakes. There are three locations you can unlock using the Imbued Sword Key, including a return to the starting area in Elden Ring.

You can also find the Night Comet spell in a treasure chest in the Center of the town. Using fires a semi-invisible comet that can shoot in quick succession or charged for increased damage.

When you’re done with Sellia, Town of Sorcery, travel to Sellia Under-Stair Site of Grace. From here, climb up and go left to find a newly unlocked boss room.

Inside you’ll face the Nox Swordstress and Nox Priest boss fight. This boss is relatively easy and you should have no problem taking them down.

Where to Get the Halo Scythe in Elden Ring

You’ll be rewarded with the Nox Flowing Sword, a curved sword that can bend like a whip using its special skill. It requires 8 strength and 15 dexterity to properly wield. Though the weapon art is very stylish, it’s too slow for practical combat use.

Further past the boss area, there’s a treasure chest with a strong staff. The Lusat’s Glintstone Staff requires 52 intelligence to use, but it enhances the power of all sorceries. Unfortunately, the catch is that it also increases their focus point consumption, up to 50%. It’s up to you to decide if it’s a worthwhile trade for your spell repertoire.

When you’re completely finished Sellia, Town of Sorcery, go back to Gowry’s Shack and retrieve the needle from him. You might have to reload the area multiple times though to get him to give it to you.

After receiving the item, return to where the golden tree was and continue up the hill. You’ll reach the Church of Plague and can cure Millicent of her scarlet rot to start her quest.
