As a fan of the Assassin’s Creed video game series, you’ve had more content to digest than fans of almost any other series. There have been twelve installments in the main series so far and several successful spin-offs.

Despite there being so many worlds to explore, you’d most likely enjoy playing something with similar gameplay but set in a completely different universe.

Almost everyone who has enjoyed playing Assassin’s Creed adores the game for its stealth and parkour mechanics. There is nothing more fun than activities like sneaking up on enemies and performing the legendary leap of faith.

It’s not easy to find good video games that share similarities with Assassin’s Creed. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what you’re going to find in this list of eight games similar to Assassin’s Creed.

Aragami

Aragami is probably the game that’s the most similar to Assassin’s Creed while still having its own unique features and an interesting story.

This action-adventure stealth game was developed by Lince Works. It was released in 2016 and is available for Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The game features both single-player and multiplayer modes.

The story follows the player-character named Aragami, who is an assassin that possesses supernatural abilities. You have the power to control shadows, which is an incredibly intriguing gameplay mechanic. Essentially, you’re able to teleport from shadow to shadow when tracking down enemies.

The events in the game take place in a city called Kyuryu. One day, you get summoned into existence by an astral projection of a girl named Yamiko. She tells you about an army of warriors known as the Kaiho who have captured and imprisoned the Empress as well as her retainers. One of the people who were captured is Yamiko. She requests that you help free them, so you embark on your journey.

There are 13 chapters that you’ll need to complete in Aragami. You will start doing missions on your own at first. However, you’ll get the help of a raven that will serve as your sidekick later on. The raven can give you specific locations of objectives or be used as a distraction for enemies.

As you progress the game, your character will learn numerous useful skills.

Dishonored 2

It’s fair to say that the creators of Aragami took inspiration from both Assassin’s Creed and Dishonored when they were making their game. Dishonored is a video game series that follows assassins with supernatural abilities. This is the second installment in the series.

Dishonored 2 is an action-adventure stealth game that was released in 2016. It features only a single-player mode and is available for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

There are two playable characters to choose from. One is an assassin named Corvo Attano, who served as the only playable character in the first Dishonored game. The other is Empress Emily Kaldwin, who is Corvo’s daughter.

The events in Dishonored 2 take place in a fictional city called Karnaca, which was modeled after cities in countries like Spain, Greece, and Italy.

Regardless of whether you decide to play as Corvo or Emily, you will have the use the same weapons. Your character will wield a retractable blade, crossbow, and pistols. You’ll also use mines and grenades to take down your enemies.

The stealth mechanics play an important role in Dishonored 2. You can finish the entire game without killing a single character. You’ll need to be a master at stealth to not attract any attention. Various sounds will trigger responses from foes.

Strike your sword against a wall and enemies will come to see what’s going on. This is bad if you don’t want to be spotted but it can be great if you want to lure enemies.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Are you looking for a game that’s very challenging but also similar in gameplay to Assassin’s Creed? If so, this is the perfect one for you. It comes as no surprise that it’s incredibly hard to finish the game considering it was developed by FromSoftware, the same team behind the Dark Souls series.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was released in 2019 and can be played on Windows, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One.

It puts a much bigger emphasis on story and narrative compared to the Dark Souls games. The story is set in a fictional version of Sengoku Japan during the 16th century. You control a disgraced warrior named Wolf who has only one hand. Nevertheless, your life mission is to protect a young lord and nothing will stop you.

Compared to Dark Souls, this game doesn’t have a lot of RPG elements. You won’t have stats to level up or create your character. Some RPG mechanics in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice include a skill tree and gear upgrades.

One of the most important mechanics in the game is stealth. If you successfully deploy your stealth skills, you’ll be able to eliminate certain enemies instantly. This often makes it easier to clear an area compared to fighting every creature you encounter.

When you’re not fighting or sneaking up on enemies in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, you’ll be exploring beautiful courtyards, valleys, dungeons, and castles.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

The Metal Gear video game series is just as iconic as Assassin’s Creed. The first game in the series was released as far back as 1987. But today we’re going to talk about The Phantom Pain, which came out in 2015. You can play this game on Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

If you like Assassin’s Creed for its stealth elements, you’ll surely enjoy Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

In this game, you control a character named Punished “Venom” Snake. You represent the leader of a mercenary unit called Diamond Dogs. Some of the items you’ll use include decoys, binoculars, explosives, and a wide range of weapons.

In case you’re a fan of the Metal Gear series, you already know how big a part stealth plays in these games. The Phantom Pain is no different as you’re encouraged to finish the game without killing enemies. Of course, you can still opt for the violent approach. But if you want to, you can subdue foes with tranquilizer darts.

An interesting feature of The Phantom Pain is its base-building system. Players have the freedom to construct their own headquarters, which serve a specific function. Namely, you can develop various items and weapons within your headquarters.

Players also have complete freedom as to how they’ll approach missions. The open-world design will allow you to decide what your journey will look like. For more content, check out other games like Metal Gear Solid.

Hitman: Absolution

Hitman: Absolution is another video game that comes from a legendary series. The Hitman series has been around since 2000. Absolution is one of the fan favorites from the series. It was developed by IO Interactive and released in 2012. You can play it on Windows, OS X, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

You take on the role of Agent 47, a genetically engineered assassin. The events in the game take place after you receive a contract from the International Contract Agency to take out your former handler. The story is full of interesting events and will have you running from both the police and the Agency.

As you would expect from a game within the Hitman series, the stealth mechanics are prevalent here.

You play Absolution from a third-person perspective. There are numerous objectives you’ll have to complete to progress the game. Sometimes, your objective will be to eliminate an enemy and it will take some time and effort. Other objectives are much easier, like reaching the end of a certain level.

Apart from killing your targets, you don’t have to harm anyone else. If you decide to go with the stealth approach, you can reach your targets by blending into the environment and using a variety of disguises. However, you also have the freedom to choose the action approach. In this case, you’ll be using everything from assault rifles to shotguns on your missions to take down enemies. Batman: Arkham City

Batman: Arkham City is an action-adventure game with stealth elements. It represents the second installment in the Batman: Arkham video game series. The game was released in 2011 and is available for Windows, OS X, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

In the Batman universe, Arkham City refers to a mega-prison that was built to house inmates from Blackgate Prison and Arkham Asylum. The story in the game follows the events after Bruce Wayne holds a press conference to oppose the prison and ultimately gets locked up in Arkham City.

The story is well-written and will make it seem like you’re in a Batman movie.

There is a big open world to explore in Batman: Arkham City. Stealth is a major part of the gameplay. You can choose to move silently and remain undetected throughout most of the game. When you’re facing enemies, you can use both stealth moves and some clever gadgets to take down NPCs without them noticing you.

Upon its release, the game was praised for its combat system. Players have the ability to counter multiple blows at the same time. You can also perform a series of consecutive strikes, and even attack aerially.

Apart from Batman, you can also take on the role of Catwoman. This character is available through the Catwoman campaign, which intersects with the main Batman story at times but generally follows her storyline about a heist.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Shadow of Mordor had the biggest launch for any game based upon the Lord of the Rings universe. The success achieved by the team behind this game is well deserved as it’s truly a masterpiece in the action-adventure genre.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was developed by Monolith Productions and released in 2014. It features only a single-player mode but it contains a marvelous story and a big open-world environment. You can play the game on Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

Shadow of Mordor introduced an exciting feature called the Nemesis system.

The Nemesis system was designed so that it would enable AI that controls non-playable characters to remember their previous actions against the player. This results in interesting battles with enemies.

Stealth elements in Shadow of Mordor are quite reminiscent of Assassin’s Creed games, and so are the parkour mechanics.

Players take control of a character named Talion. You’re a ranger who wants revenge after his family gets killed by the forces of Sauron. There are many main missions and side quests you can participate in. When you complete missions, you’ll be able to unlock new abilities that will make you stronger.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Parkour is such an iconic mechanic of the Assassin’s Creed games. Horizon Zero Dawn provides players with the same mechanic along with a glorious open world and stunning visuals. This action RPG was developed by Guerrilla Games. It came out in 2017 and is available for PlayStation 4 and Windows.

The game was a PlayStation exclusive for three years before being released for Windows. It’s one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games ever made. Horizon Zero Dawn became so popular that a Netflix show set in its world is in development.

The story in the game is set in a post-apocalyptic world. Huge robotic creatures have taken over the planet. You control a character named Aloy, who hunts down these giant robots. Apart from ridding the land of danger, you hunt them down so you can loot their parts and use them as crafting resources.

The gameplay mechanics in Horizon Zero Dawn provide outstanding replay value.

There are multiple ways to defeat your robotic enemies. You can use explosives, set traps, shoot them with arrows, and throw spears at them. Each kill will give you experience points. As you defeat enemies and complete quests, you’ll progressively level up. With each level, you’ll be able to learn new skills and upgrade existing ones.

Players have the freedom to use a stealth approach whenever possible to not attract attention. For instance, you can sometimes swim toward robotic creatures instead of approaching them on foot to go undetected.
