Genre:Survival Horror, First-Person Shooter
Developers:Turtle Rock Studios
Release Date:October 12, 2021
Find at:PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Steam
Multiplayer:Online PvP, Online Co-op

Back 4 Blood is a first-person co-op shooting game that was developed by the same creators as Left 4 Dead. It is a fitting game to start this awesome list.

You may notice a lot of similarities between the two games.

The premise starts with a Devil Worm outbreak. Anyone that gets into contact with it gets infected by a virus that turns people into zombies, also known as the Ridden.

The survivors are known as the Cleaners. Each Cleaner has a special skill that is entirely unique to them. These skills can be used as an advantage when fighting the Ridden.

The game introduces a card system where before each mission, players are able to choose cards to equip.

These cards serve as upgrades to your stats and abilities. Best of all, you can customize your decks with all the cards you earn. You can choose to focus on a specific build to maximize your character’s potential during games.

Of course, we can’t forget the special zombies that we all hate and love. In Back 4 Blood, there are sub-variants of the special zombies, making them more diverse.

World War Z is a 4-player survival shooting game. It involves fighting through swarms of zombies, also known as Zekes, and clearing each stage as part of the story progression. The game is set in different cities, such as Tokyo, New York, and Moscow.

Just like Left 4 Dead, World War Z also has special zombies.

We have the Lurker, who is the equivalent of the Hunter. Both zombies pounce on you, pinning you down and attacking you until you get knocked out.

The freakiest thing about this game is that Zekes are not only fast, but they can also stack onto each other to reach higher ground. This aspect adds to the thrill of the game. Just when you think you’re safe, they find a way to still get you.

World War Z also has a few PvP games, the same as Left 4 Dead. While the gameplay mechanics are different, it is still a breath of fresh air when you get tired of playing campaign modes.

Contagion

Genre:Horror
Developers:Monochrome, Inc
Release Date:October 25, 2013
Find at:Steam
Multiplayer:N/A
Average Playthrough:9 hours

Contagion is a first-person shooter game. There are modes that you’d enjoy: Escape, Extraction, and Hunted.

Escape is the main campaign of the game, where players will have to complete all objectives and escape. Aside from weapons, you are equipped with a phone. All information regarding the objectives can be viewed there as a guide.

Remember having to wait for rescue vehicles in Left 4 Dead? In Extraction, you do the same thing, but in addition to that, you will have civilians to protect. As you call your rescue vehicle, you will be attacked by waves of zombies coming at you.

Hunted is a PvP mode where the last man alive wins the game. Each player has a weapon and a limited amount of ammo. Supplies can be looted throughout the map.

Killing a zombie will sometimes also drop your ammo.

In Contagion, you get to respawn as a zombie and attack your teammates once infected. You’ll find out how quickly your teammates can turn into enemies.

Killing Floor 2 is a zombie shooting game that can be played with up to 6 people in the normal mode and 12 players in the versus mode.

Players can choose their Class or Perks before the game commences. Each perk has a special attribute and its own starting loadout.

Survivors will go against zombies or Zeds that come in waves. The game can have four or more waves before the final boss fight. In between waves, survivors can interact with a trader to purchase or sell items.

It is best to save up on ammo during the first few waves since the Zeds get stronger during the latter waves.

Just like Left 4 Dead, Killing Floor 2 also has a versus mode where players are split into two teams: humans and Zeds. The Zed you will spawn as is completely random, so you’re in for a surprise!

Killing Floor is one of the best zombie games on Steam.

Dying Light

dying light
Genre:Survival Horror
Developers:Techland
Release Date:January 26, 2015
Find at:PlayStation Store, My Nintendo Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Amazon
Multiplayer:Online PvP, Online Co-op
Average Playthrough:18 hours

Dying Light is a survival horror game where you find yourself in the midst of a viral outbreak that turns humans into aggressive zombies, also known as the infected.

The storytelling of Dying Light is very compelling. Most zombie games have their typical clichés, but Dying Light is different. It is a good story-rich game you can also find on Steam.

Dying Light is also known for its concept of day and night. The behavior of the infected varies based on the time of the day you encounter them. When you encounter an infected during the daytime, you will notice that they are typically slow and don’t chase after you.

When it gets dark, that’s when you’d have to be extremely careful. You’ll hear the initial scream, followed by creepy sounds coming from the infected.

During the nighttime, the infected are stronger and faster and will chase you whenever they spot you. This is the time of the day that they are out and about. You’ll need to find safe zones, such as The Tower, to avoid danger. Question is, can you make it?

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2 Cover
Genre:Survival Horror
Developers:Capcom
Release Date:January 25, 2019
Find at:PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Amazon
Multiplayer:N/A
Average Playthrough:9 hours

It is no surprise that Resident Evil will be included on this list. This game is a survival horror game that stemmed from the failed experiments of the Umbrella Corporation.

Umbrella Corporation created the T-Virus, which was initially meant to be a bioweapon. However, it has side effects, one of which involves turning humans into flesh-eating creatures.

While playing the game, you will encounter several different zombies. Just like Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil also has different zombie types. Each zombie holds a different skill and can be easily recognizable by their attire. Some also have the ability to drop loot once defeated.

Before you take a shot, you must always remember that resources are limited. Therefore, you might not have enough bullets to take them all out.

You don’t have to kill all the zombies, though. There are places where you will find crippled zombies, or some of them cannot even walk. Take advantage of these zombies, as they will help you conserve your bullets.

If the Resident Evil series is a bit of a stretch to be compared to Left 4 Dead because of its gameplay, you can look at Resident Evil Resistance.

The game works like a mix of Left 4 Dead and Dead by Daylight. You will have one killer spawning zombies in a small space. Their goal is to stop the survivors from completing objectives and advancing/escaping.

Into the Dead

Into the Dead
Genre:Action, Survival Horror
Developers:PikPok
Release Date:December 6, 2012
Find at:Apple Store, Google Store

Into the Dead is a zombie-themed game that is available on Android, IOS, and Nintendo Switch. You are separated from your family, and you need to search for them in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

This game involves a lot of running and jumping through forests, swamps, and barricades. You will have to run through waves of zombies and attack them on the go.

An interesting factor here is the missions that are attached to the storyline. Each chapter will have a total of 5 dedicated challenges, such as the need to get 25 kills with a bow or to get two kills in a single shot. Completing a mission will earn gold that can be used for weapon upgrades.

The game features over 60 levels. The second game even has three different endings. You are able to equip a primary and secondary weapon to help you during fights. Every time you kill a zombie, you gain XP. You can even choose a furry friend to keep you company during runs.

State of Decay

State of Decay
Genre:Action, Survival Horror
Developers:Undead Labs
Release Date:June 5, 2013
Find at:Microsoft Store and Steam
Multiplayer:N/A
Average Playthrough:16 hours

State of Decay is an open-world zombie survival game that is available in single-player and co-op. Not only do you have to survive the apocalypse, but you will also have to survive a blood plague in the second game.

You will have a number of survivors to choose from, with each having its own specialty. This game allows you to switch between survivors easily. The challenge here is to keep them alive because you can get them permanently killed.

You will encounter a lot of different zombie types, the strongest being the Juggernaut, which can be compared to the Tank in Left 4 Dead. Both of them have a large build and are harder to defeat than the rest.

State of Decay allows players to openly explore the map, looting supplies along the way and bringing them back to build their shelter. Resources are very limited as weapons break when they are all used up. This way, the game feels more realistic.

The Last of Us

the last of us
Genre:Survival Horror
Developers:Naughty Dog LLC
Release Date:March 28, 2023
Find at:PlayStation Store, Steam, and Amazon
Multiplayer:N/A
Average Playthrough:15 hours

The Last of Us is an action-adventure game situated in an apocalyptic world after the spread of the Cordyceps brain infection. This is a fungal infection that turns humans into zombie-like creatures known as the infected.

While living in an apocalyptic world, you will have to defend yourself from the infected from time to time. The game features different kinds of infected.

They vary based on how long they have been infected. The most common you will encounter are the Runners. They are recently infected and tend to come in hordes.

We have the Shambler, which can be compared to the Spitter in Left 4 Dead. The Shambler spews acid that damages you when in contact.

The greatest challenge in the game is the scarcity of weapons and ammo. While you can craft weapons such as molotovs based on the items you loot, you will still find yourself struggling to look for more.

When in a pickle, you can use melee weapons instead by sneaking up on the infected one by one. Make sure to be very quiet, or you’ll be attacked from all corners.

No More Room in Hell

No More Room in Hell
Genre:First-Person, Survival Horror
Developers:No More Room in Hell Team
Release Date:October 31, 2011
Find at:Steam
Multiplayer:N/A

No More Room in Hell is a first-person survival game set in a zombie apocalypse.

One of the objectives in the game involves looking for fuel in order to power up a generator. Sounds familiar, right?

That’s because Left 4 Dead also has this objective. There will also be instances where you will have to call for help. Of course, while performing these objectives, you will be chased by zombies that spring out everywhere you go.

When a teammate dies, they will respawn at the next checkpoint, just like in Left 4 Dead.

Another similar feature is your ability to shove enemies away from you. When you are surrounded by a ton of zombies, and you don’t know how to escape them, you can push them away and attack. Doing this action over and over again will help keep you safe from their bites.

Zombie Army Trilogy

Genre:Third-Person Shooter
Developers:Rebellion Developments
Release Date:March 31, 2020
Find at:PlayStation Store, My Nintendo Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Amazon
Multiplayer:N/A
Average Playthrough:14 hours

Zombie Army is a third-person shooting game from the creators of Sniper Elite 3. At first glance, it is your typical zombie shooter game. However, when you take a look at the story, you will find that you are dealing with Nazi zombies.

The apocalypse happened because Hitler refused to surrender. Instead, he initiated Plan Z, which is resurrecting dead soldiers and turning them into zombies.

The game deals with weapons that were present in World War II, such as grenades and landmines, making it a bit more realistic. You will also have to use various types of sniper rifles rather than close-range guns.

The difficulty here is that you will have to take the direction and strength of the wind into consideration before you shoot.

The 4th franchise even has a horde mode where you will deal with waves and waves of zombies coming right at you. All of this while you have limited resources to take them out.

Blood and Zombies

Find at:Steam
Multiplayer:Online Co-op
Average Playthrough:4 hours

Blood and Zombies is a first-person zombie shooter game that requires you to defend yourself from waves of zombies coming from all corners.

If you remember standing your ground while waiting to be rescued in Left 4 Dead, this is just about the same thing.

You will have to set up your line of defense, hoping that none of the zombies will get close to you. This game even has zombies that are holding weapons, which makes it scarier. There are even zombie dogs who are faster than the average.

Before you start your game, you can choose your character and your weapons. Weapons can be upgraded as you progress.

You will have an idea of how many zombies you are up against per wave as this is displayed on the upper left side of your screen. Every time you eliminate one, the number decreases. It will be like a countdown until the next wave.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies

Genre:First-Person Shooter
Developers:Treyarch, Raven Software
Release Date:November 13, 2020
Find at:PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Amazon
Multiplayer:Online Co-op
Average Playthrough:6 hours

Call of Duty is a first-person shooting game. Black Ops Cold War has a zombie mode which fans of Left 4 Dead are sure to enjoy.

There is an unusual activity going around in an abandoned bunker. You and your friends are deployed to find out what’s going on. This is where you meet the zombies.

Before you start the game, you can pick the loadout. This makes you able to focus on upgrades instead of looting and hoping to find the perfect gun for you.

Skills are upgradeable with field upgrades. These will improve your overall combat ability. For example, you can use Frost Blast to slow zombies down while you try your best to evade their hungry bites. Or you can use Healing Aura to come to your team’s aid.

Once you reach wave ten on endless mode, you will have the option to call rescue. If you choose to continue, the next helicopter will be available after five waves. Make sure that you have enough resources to survive until then.
