STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, Call of Pripyat – A ‘games like Metro Exodus’ list would be incomplete without these games. Fun fact! Many of the STALKER developers actually worked on Metro.
The STALKER franchise and Metro universe are actually inspired by the same story too, the apocalyptic science fiction novel Roadside Picnic by authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.
From the atmosphere to the gameplay, and even the story beats, you’ll feel right at home in the STALKER universe if you’re coming from Metro Exodus.
If you thought you escaped all the Russian swearing and yelling in Exodus, get ready for them in STALKER, too. The STALKER games are set in an alternate world’s Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
While the visuals for STALKER aren’t as new or flashy as Metro Exodus, the games still hold up well. They’re a must-play if you’re looking for a new apocalyptic survival shooter.
The STALKER games are also more open in terms of design compared to Exodus. STALKER gives you room to breathe and explore the world on your own terms. There’s also a huge modding community for all three titles.
The series is incredibly immersive, and the atmosphere is masterfully put together. STALKER will have you trying to survive “The Zone”, against mutated creatures, mercenaries, and deadly radiation. Sound familiar?
The series also has an incredible AI system which has aged well. It also features dynamic day-night cycles and weather systems that impact gameplay, and the map is accurately modelled off the real Chernobyl.
Bethesda’s Fallout Franchise
Available on PC, PS4 and Xbox.
Fallout 3, New Vegas, or 4 – take your pick. If you want a more RPG take on the post-apocalyptic world, Bethesda has you covered, even if it can be a bit more lighthearted.
While the Fallout games aren’t as survival or horror heavy as some other titles on this games like Metro Exodus list, they’re worth checking out! The Fallout games have aged pretty well, and New Vegas especially is universally loved for its amazing writing.
Fallout shouldn’t need any explanation. The games feature an aesthetic inspired by a heavily stylized 1950s vision of the future. The games all take place (varying years) after the drop of nuclear bombs.
It’s the height of the Cold War with the Russians and China, and you’ll need to do your best to survive whatever the world throws at you in Fallout.
The biggest difference between Metro Exodus and the Fallout games is with the design. Fallout is extremely open, in both world and at times, it’s even a sandbox.
There’s a huge level of interactivity with the character and surrounding world in the Fallout games, which is completely unique to Bethesda titles.
The massive wastelands and cityscapes of Fallout are also a nice breath of fresh air compared to the tunnels of Moscow. They also offer way more replayability than Metro Exodus, especially with the massive modding community.
This recommendation is for Bethesda’s new Fallout games, the older Fallout 1 and 2 are different beasts. They’re amazing, but they’re tactical RPGs. Less survival and horror. You should check out our list for games like classic Fallout if you want something like those.
Dying Light 2 Stay Human
Available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch (Cloud Version).
The apocalypse is here, but add in some parkour, multiplayer fun, and great melee combat! Dying Light 2 is one of my favorite recommendations if you want games similar to Metro Exodus.
Dying Light 2 has one of the best open worlds in any game I’ve seen, with an incredible traversal system. It features parkour movement, which feels natural and is super easy to grasp. It’s one of the best open world games on the PS5 by a mile.
The game will have you leaping from building to building, as you survive the apocalypse. The combat is also super satisfying, especially for melee. Coming from Exodus, you’ll see it’s a huge improvement.
Dying Light 2 has a bit of a different take on the post-apocalypse. Instead of nuclear bombs going off, and mutated monsters, it’s all zombies!
While the game is an open world, it still has a pretty tight and strong story too. It doesn’t rival Exodus but it certainly comes close.
The game’s characters are memorable, the missions are incredibly fun, and the world is well fleshed out (pardon the pun). There’s no need to face the apocalypse alone either, you can play with up to 2-4 other people! It’s one of the best picks for fans of games like Metro Exodus who want something more unique.
Resident Evil Village
Available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox.
One of the best story-driven survival horror experiences, also set in a post-apocalyptic world. Resident Evil (8) Village is absolutely gorgeous, nail-biting, and nails the terrifying atmosphere. It’s one of the most spectacular horror games on the PS5.
Resident Evil Village almost gives Metro Exodus a run for its money as the best first-person survival-horror shooter. The game picks up after Resident Evil 7, set a few years later.
The game is somewhat linear, similar to Exodus. There’s no massive world to explore, For the better. It’s a well-crafted experience and delivers on what it promises. The environments in Resident Evil Village are absolutely breathtaking, and the game also has puzzles here and there to keep you engaged.
Just like Exodus, the game will also have you counting down every bullet in your inventory. Killing monsters is hard, but survival is even harder.
If you were a fan of how Exodus blended action and horror elements, Village does it just as well. There’s a great amount of kicking ass, and an equally good amount of running scared out of your mind.
The game also has plenty of different difficulty options, which allow for different play styles. Plus, who doesn’t love the vampire mommy Lady Dimitrescu?

Alien: Isolation

Aliens might not have anything to do with post-apocalyptic Moscow, but hear us out. Alien: Isolation captures the same sort of atmosphere Metro Exodus does. Alien: Isolation manages to create the same sort of gripping, tense mood that Exodus offers. You’ll be at the edge of your seat, jumping at every small sound.
The game is downright terrifying.
The game is probably the best on this list at recreating the horror element that Metro Exodus offers. Alien: Isolation is also a survival game, but with an emphasis on stealth.
The aim of the game is to explore a space station, while evading the Alien. You cannot kill it, and it’ll pursue you to the end.
Even though you have weapons at your disposal, ammunition is extremely limited. Which is another aspect of Isolation that’s similar to Exodus. You really need to put thought into how you’re going to survive, and utilize everything you have at your disposal. Count every last bullet and every last pipe bomb.
The game also has a campaign mode if you’re looking for a tight story with a strong plot. If you’re looking to just have fun, no string attached. There’s also a survivor mode.
It’s literally an out-of-the-world recommendation, but it’s perfect if you really enjoy the survival horror elements of games like Metro Exodus. Aliens is an iconic horror franchise, and Isolation really captures the essence of the series.
DayZ
Available on PC, PS4, and Xbox.
DayZ is the long-hailed king of the multiplayer survival genre. It’s no surprise it’s on our games like Metro Exodus list. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for something similar in setting and atmosphere.
If you ever wanted to play a survival-horror game like Metro multiplayer, DayZ is the game for you. It’s even set in a (fictional) map inspired by Russia!
You can’t beat DayZ when it comes to the atmosphere and emergent storytelling. The game has you paranoid in the best way, checking every corner, scared of every distant gunshot and zombie growl.
The game pits you up against zombies and other players alike. Due to the game’s simulation aspects, this can result in many different situations and types of interactions. Maybe you’ve been kidnapped and have to get involved in a fight club? Or maybe, you and your friend are hostages and being force-fed human meat.
DayZ also goes hard on the harsh realism aspect. Eat human meat? You’ll slowly go crazy. Broken bones? Craft a splint. Even wound infections are a threat!
If you liked the survival aspect of Exodus, this turns it up to the extreme. DayZ also has a strong modding community and player-made servers.
Because of the modding scene, this makes it easy to spice up your gameplay. Some servers add in traders and quests for more objectives, while others even add new gear.
BioShock
Available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox.
Who hasn’t heard of BioShock? It’s an absolute classic, especially if you’re looking for story-driven first-person shooters in the same vein as Metro.
The game still holds up incredibly well and features a stylized, retrofuturistic aesthetic you’re sure to fall in love with. It might not be the tunnels of Moscow, but BioShock is set in the underwater city utopia known as the Rapture, and the vibes are very similar.
The atmosphere of BioShock is deeply immersive, you’ll instantly get drawn into the world and characters. The world design is incredible, and every banner, room, or sign you’ll see in-game adds to it.
The combat is also top tier, as you play Jack. You’ll try your best to flee from Rapture, as the city heads into a steep decline. What sets it apart from other games is that Jack can change his DNA, granting himself unique powers.
The game also borrows heavily from the survival-horror genre. It blends in elements from Resident Evil and the cult classic System Shock.
If you’re a sucker for philosophy, BioShock also covers the themes of dystopia and utopia expertly. If the combat and setting weren’t enough to sell you on it – maybe the game’s writing will! This game is a modern classic and a must-play for fans of games like Metro Exodus.
Escape from Tarkov
Available on PC.
Escape from Tarkov is another multiplayer survival game, kind of in the vein of DayZ. It doubles down on hardcore realism, creating a tense and adrenaline-filling atmosphere.
While it’s not the same sort of scare you get from seeing a Humanimal come at you in Metro Exodus, Tarkov manages to recreate it well.
Seeing a scav or another player run at you in Tarkov is the most intense gaming experience I’ve ever had. The sounds of guns filling the air, bullets flying past, and putting everything on the line – it’s a one-of-a-kind thrill.
The basic gameplay loop of Tarkov is going into zones, looking for loot, and then fighting against other players and AI enemies to escape with all your items. But the catch is if you die, you lose all the loot you brought with you. This adds a whole new layer of tension to the game.
This also means you need to put more thought into your inventory, organization, and deciding what ammunition and supply you bring to every run.
Tarkov is also played in rounds, condensing the survival experience into 15 to 45-minute bursts depending on the map. These rounds are known as raids.
It’s perfect if you’re looking for a heart-pumping survival experience, but can only play in shorter bursts.
Remnant: From the Ashes
Available on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox.
Remnant: From the Ashes takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where the human survivors are living in underground bunkers. Sound familiar? It’s just like Metro Exodus! Sort of…
Instead of being a first-person shooter, Remnant is instead a third-person action game with combat inspired by Soulslike games. If you wanted a game with a setting like Exodus, but a heavier focus on action, this is for you.
Remnant: From the Ashes also has a wide range of different playstyles and weapons available. From shotguns, to sniper rifles, and even melee weapons. Which you’ll use to take down an interdimensional evil.
While Remnant isn’t as story-heavy as Exodus with Artyom, a lot of its writing is told through the world and surroundings. An interdimensional being known as the ‘Root’ has taken over the earth, and it’s your job to end it.
If Dark Souls meets Metro Exodus wasn’t enough to sell you on Remnant, maybe the art style and monster design will. The creatures look nightmarish and twisted, straight out of hell.
The game also features co-op and goes a bit heavier on the RPG elements. The maps are also randomized, which allows for plenty of replayability! No run is the same. Encounters, events, and items change up every time.
Outlast
Available on PC, PS4, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
Last but not least, we have Outlast. The game took on the world by storm back in 2013. It’s an essential must-play for any fan of first-person survival horror.
While it might not take place in a post-apocalyptic world like Metro Exodus, the setting is still fascinating and worth checking out.
In Outlast, you’re put in the shoes of the investigative journalist, Miles Upshur, as he is going through a psychiatric hospital in Colorado overrun by homicidal patients.
Outlast does a fantastic job of crafting a tense and eerie atmosphere, and unlike Exodus, you can’t fight back. There are no guns or melee weapons to strike back against the horrors stalking you.
All you have with you is your trusty camcorder and legs to run. If you loved the horror elements of Exodus, you’ll feel right at home with Outlast.
The game is incredibly unsettling and is sure to fuel your nightmares. If you thought the monsters in Metro Exodus were terrifying, just wait until you see what lurks inside the hospital in Outlast. It’s one of the most gripping horror games on the Switch.
