Even though the battles are turn-based, the music and animations create some sense of movement and urgency in each combat encounter. This is a seriously impressive feat for a game made in the 16-bit era.

Besides all that, the game’s art style is absolutely gorgeous and rivals recent pixel art games. This is why Chrono Trigger is also one of the best pixel games on Steam.

I Am Setsuna

I Am Setsuna is a Japanese role-playing game that will transport you to a conflicting story about selflessness and dedication. Released in 2016, this game follows the story of Setsuna, a young woman chosen as a sacrifice to save her village from a demon.

If you’re a fan of Final Fantasy, you’ll find a lot to love in I Am Setsuna. The story is presented in a similar way and has a similar tone, with a focus on themes of sacrifice and a mysterious, world-threatening entity.

That said, I Am Setsuna really stands out is in its setting and atmosphere. The game has a beautiful, snowy landscape and a melancholic, yet hopeful tone that sets it apart from other games in the genre.

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria

Valkyrie Profile 2

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria is a stunning RPG and by far one of my favorite games of the genre. The story of this game is set hundreds of years before the events of the first Valkyrie Profile.

The events are centered on Silmeria and Alicia, two individuals who share a body and must cooperate to avert a disaster that could spark a war between the gods and the humans.

Valkyrie Profile 2 is divided into multiple chapters, and players are given the freedom to explore the towns and dungeons of the world at their own pace. The dungeons themselves are presented in a beautiful 2D platform environment, and are a joy to explore.

I personally believe that Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria is one of the most beautiful, innovative, and engaging games of the PlayStation 2 era.

The Last Remnant

Last Remnant

In Last Remnant, players take the role of Rush Sykes, a young man who ends up in the middle of a worldwide conflict while searching for his sister. Along the way, you’ll meet dozens of characters with different motivations.

The game takes place in a fantasy world with various city-states and four distinct species. It centers on David Nassau, a young warrior and ruler of the proud city of Athlum. You follow his quest to end the worldwide conflict.

The Last Remnant looks and feels like a Final Fantasy game in many ways, but it has plenty of ideas of its own that grants it a strong identity.

The most innovative thing in Last Remnant is its combat system. In this game, you have many allies, but you control squads instead of individuals. Not only that, you get to choose formations and decide how characters will evolve.

All those details make a difference during more challenging fights. You will have to think about positioning, flanking, and different formations during each fight. Paying attention to where each of your squads is and which enemy squad is more advantageous to attack in a given moment is crucial, especially during boss battles.

This game is a hardcore JRPG with one of the genre’s most complex and enjoyable battle systems. It is also a game for those who want an experience that is like Final Fantasy, but different.
